Top Gun's a classic, but wasted in 3d
This review isn't about the movie - many have seen it, and the synopsis can be found in a million different places. This review is about the 3d Blu Ray and whether it's worth purchasing. In short, no, it's not. I fairly recently received a 3d projector, so wanted to get some top quality 3d movies to watch on it. I'd been checking out various online lists about the best ones to get, and Top Gun was often included. My girlfriend being a big Top Gun fan, I thought I should buy it and give it a go. Now, previous to having a projector, the only 3d visuals I'd seen before were either from 80's style blue & red glasses or at Disney World in Florida - probably the 2 extremes! Understanding that Top Gun wasn't filmed in 3d, and that it was a post production 3d movie, I was prepared for the ... Though the shots of the planes flying through the wide blue yonder were fairly spectacular, this is the same whether watching in 3d or regular 2d. Though in each scene there was an obvious fore, mid and background, which seemingly brought depth to the film, each layer itself lacked any depth, and it was like 3 separate 2d layers being played on top of each other at once. True, my girlfriend enjoyed seeing Kilmer and Cruise playing volleyball in HD (probably a bit too much...), but where the original version of the film made us create our own depth of vision, the 3d version doesn't let our brain/eyes do this, so strange as it sounds, the 3d version seemed flatter than the VHS version we've had in the house for a million years. Still, I have to give it 3 stars, as any lower would be unfair to what remains a quality piece of cinema, though it would be wise to remember the famous phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - it should have stayed 2d.

The Need for Speed
I wore out my VHS version of this film way back when. I bought the 2 disk dvdset special collectors edition in 2004 on region 1. I meant to buy the region 2 version on dvd but just never did. I bought this edition rather than just the single film for the brilliant special features, and documentaries. Including interviews with the writers, director Tony Scott, Tom Cruise and several other members of the cast, as well as the ex Top Gun navy pilots who were on set consultants. The 2004 remastered version on dvd looked good anyway. Obviously you can't expect such an old film to look as good as new ones filmed in hi def but this is as close as we are going to get, the 5.1 sound is also amazing.I wore out my VHS version of this film way back when. Really can tell the difference with picture quality and sound via surround sound and full hd etc , turn your speakers up get the neighbours out sit back and enjoy , one of the best films ever made
