Classic and Fantastic
From scope-fitted guns to cows on cars, to sinking into polar ice... this set has it all! While not nearly as entertaining as Bostwana or Vietnam, I definitely get more than my fair share of laughs from watching James & Jeremy battle the elements in their souped up Toyota truck while Hammond tries to ski behind a pack of huskies... or when the three ride into Alabama state-side and end up getting chased out by rednecks throwing stones at not just them, but the camera crews as well! And then sued by Christian organizations for charitable contributions! Pound for pound they are lacking a bit in entertainment value (compared to vol 2) and don't have the traditional Top Gear intro, or extras that were clipped (and I'm really sad they didn't cinlude them). But beware the frostbitten... well, you'll find out. American Challenge: excellent except it feels over a bit too soon, primarily because they drive mostly highways through Florida, and there just isn't enough drama. And when they try to build the drama, it ends up being downright dangerous! Still worth the watch for Fat Stig. Highly recommend. But get both this and Vol 2... I can watch Bostwana forever and never get bored.

If you like Top Gear you love this DVD
It is the best DVD for Top Gear Fans. I loved it, if you like Top Gear, you'll love this DVD. It contains the classic USA trip, the one were they were attacked

Great show, poor DVD
"Top Gear" is, in my opinion, the best show on TV by miles. I wear my "Vote Clarkson" T-shirt with pride and watch everything with Richard Hammond in it, so it really pains me that this DVD is not nearly as good as it could be. Certainly, things start out well with the "Polar Special". This is the unseen "Director's Cut" edition that has more than ten minutes of extra footage. The unfortunate thing is that none of that extra footage answers the most important question of all - did Hammond and his dogs get to the pole? Surely, we could have had a little coda tagged on the end. Even so, this was a fantasic special, which obviously involved a hell of a lot of logistics from all concerned, which leads me to my second point. This episode would really have benefited from a director's ... "Top Gear" is, in my opinion, the best show on TV by miles. Surely the material is there. The BBC seems to have missed a trick with this one. Instead of releasing a truly brilliant DVD, they've released just an average one. And after spending all that effort on filming in HD as well... Mind you, this is nothing compared to the second disc, which contains the "US Special" - the one where they have to drive from Florida to New Orleans and try and get across the state of Alabama with offensive slogans daubed on their cars. Hilarious when first shown on the BBC, but as soon as you pop the disc in your DVD player, you'll quickly notice that many scenes have been cut. For example, Clarkson's in-car shower and Hammond's grill just appear on their cars without explanation. Come on BBC, I can see more footage than this on Dave! What the hell happened? I think it might be down to music rights clearance, but the editing on this second disc is REALLY shabby. There's no other word for it, and again, there are no extra features. Surely someone from the production team could have took some time out to record a commentary and tell us exactly what was real and what was fake, because let's face it, a lot of "Top Gears" famous challenges are "bigged up" for the cameras. Also, it would have made commercial sense for the third recent "great adventure", the "African Special" to be included in this set as well, but again, the BBC have let the side down. This DVD will fly off the shelves like no tomorrow, mainly because "Top Gear" is just so cool, but this doesn't disguise the fact that this is a very poor DVD indeed. It could and should have been a lot better than this. My advice is to keep the Polar Special and use the American disc as a coffee mat or frisbee or something. And someone please please get the BBC special features people to show this series some of the respect it so clearly deserves.
