Notes
If one had to pare the prog-rock story down to a handful ofessential albums, this would undoubtedly be one of them. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND was the culmination of all that Genesis had been striving for since their late-'60s inception, the refinement of the vision that developed on TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME, and FOXTROT (somewhere in the world, there's been a second-wave prog outfit named after every one of thesealbums). The fusion of a complex classical mind with an electrified rock heart and pastoral folk spirit defined Genesis' anatomy, and never more effectively than on SELLING ENGLAND. Peter Gabriel's startlingly unpretentious tale-spinning is at it's best on "The Battle of Epping Forest". Tony Banks's elegant, sophisticated keyboard work is a vital element of nearly every tune, and the electric/acoustic guitar tapestry woven by Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford is the perfect icing on the cake. Somewhat anomalous but entirely welcomeis the Gabriel-era band's catchiest, quirkiest song "I KnowWhat I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", the tale of a somewhat daft gardener. Phil Collins's lead vocal on the gorgeous acoustic ballad "More Fool Me" paints the shape of things to come. If you only buy one Genesis album, make it this one.

    Great album!

Great album. Finally discovering Peter Gabriel Genesis as many years as a fan of the popularized version of the band.

  • Selling England by the Pound

Genesis, pre-Collins, was the most brilliant group of musicians ever. Wordsmith Peter Gabriel was absolutely fantastic as vocalist, flutist, and writer of most of the lyrics. I am telling you, the music was so unusual for its time, there was no genre they fit into, and I suppose, today that is still true. Genesis, first and foremost, were a group of incredibly talented musicians, and one would guess that each was a classically trained musician. Huge chord changes, remaniscent of Vivaldi, incredibly awkward and sophisticated bar time, or beat. Gabriel was a story teller, who gives the listener a portal into the peculiarities of the English culture and unspoken sentiments towards such mundane topics as clothing, mowing a lawn, street brawls in London and so on. I hope to find more ...

  • Still Under Rated

Selling England By the Pound may well be the best of all the Genesis albums. I love "lamp lays down", and even "Land of Confusion". This album recently was named the number one "Progressive Rock" album of all time. It has the classic Genesis line up. Steve Hackett on Guitar, Mike Rutherford on bass, Phil Collins on drums(he also sings lead on one of the tracks here, trying his best to sound like Peter Gabrieal who of course handles lead vocals, and the great Tony Banks on keyboards. This is the band at their height, not hit makers but true great music makers.

  • The REAL Genesis

PROS: Genesis at their zenith, so many classics for those of us who really appreciate complex musical arrangements and witty storytelling. CONS: That Phil Collins did not remain behind his drum kit where he belongs! It's too bad most people only identify Genesis with the Phil Collins era of the 80's and later. Oh what their missing! Thank god we have "The Musical Box" that keeps the music alive and who recreates this album and all PG era Genesis perfectly. Phil's contribution to this album and PG era Genesis work was awesome. Peter Gabriel was definitely a unique cat. "I Know What I Like In Your Wardrobe" and "Firth of Fifth" are two of my favorites on "SEBTP" but I thoroughly enjoy the entire trip. This and all PG era ...

  • One of the best in progressive rock

This was the first Genesis album I had bought, but I had heard other songs from the Gabriel era, and of course from the Collins era. I was very happily surprised when hearing this album, my initial reaction was that this is some of the best music I have ever heard. It is really refined on Selling England, and the music seems to be drawing together to a central point especially on songs like Dancing with the Moon Light Knight and Firth of Fifth. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who likes progressive rock especially to one who likes bands like Yes and Camel.
