A Powerful PVR Which Is Slightly Spolied (For The User) By Flawed Design
There are three significant design flaws in this otherwise excellect and powerful PVR. First, the way in which the menus for setting up the PVR (to suit the user's requirements) is over-complicated and poorly explained. If I was not a pretty experienced user of electronics, I would NOT be able to set this PVR up to optimise its usefulness, since the (digital) manual which was provided is frequently difficult to understand or simply does not refer to some key issues. Second, the hard drive ALWAYS offers XP mode (high definition) whenever one sets the PVR up for recording. While some programmes are best viewed in HD Mode, this is completely unnecessary for others (e.g. weather forecasts or news). There is apparently no way of changing this XP mode default so that, for example, SP (standard ... There are three significant design flaws in this otherwise excellect and powerful PVR. My best Panasonic yet!
My very first DVD Recorder was an early Philips, but once I discovered the advantages of DVD-RAM I've always bought Panasonic. Every recorder has been better than the one before, and the EX88 is no exception - for example, my last buy was an EX85, but that didn't have series record (which is one of my favourite EX88 features), nor did it offer one-touch recording of a programme that had already started (a real bug-bear). Then there's the massive 400gb hard drive - it's going to be a real challenge to fill that! Fortunately the EX88 allows me to group programmes into folders - and creates them automatically when I use series record. I have discovered one small problem - the 'simple' Copy function sometimes won't allow the high-speed copying of programmes from HDD to DVD-R when it ought to. ... My very first DVD Recorder was an early Philips, but once I discovered the advantages of DVD-RAM I've always bought Panasonic. Every recorder has been better than the one before, and the EX88 is no exception - for example, my last buy was an EX85, but that didn't have series record (which is one of my favourite EX88 features), nor did it offer one-touch recording of a programme that had already started (a real bug-bear). Then there's the massive 400gb hard drive - it's going to be a real challenge to fill that! Fortunately the EX88 allows me to group programmes into folders - and creates them automatically when I use series record. I have discovered one small problem - the 'simple' Copy function sometimes won't allow the high-speed copying of programmes from HDD to DVD-R when it ought to. Fortunately that's easily overcome by using the Advanced Copy (which isn't really 'advanced' - it was the only copy method that my earlier recorders offered). There are two standby modes - one cuts the wake-up time to just a couple of seconds, and whilst it uses a little more power, it's still no more than the EX85 used as standard.
