I am a huge fan of this band. I always have been and probably always will be. We all have that band or two or maybe a particular artist/vocalist/guitarist we're particularly fond of and Metallica is that band for me. I'm also a huge fan of the documentary genre, particularly as it pertains to both film and book. Stephen Ambrose and Ken Burns being two top documentarians in their respective forms, being book and film. And now I can add one more filmmaker to that list: Adam Dubin. He did an excellent job on this; it's concise, it's humorous, it's tense and extremely entertaining. It's one of those two-part films that's very easy to watch in it's entirety, regardless of the time. I've been late to work because of this film and it was worth it. Of course, again Metallica is one of my number one favorite bands (Jane's Addiction & Guns 'N' Roses pre-break up, drummer switch not withstanding) so I'm biased, but honestly, that's only as far as the SUBJECT matter goes; as it being an excellent documentary, in my opinion it stands up against any of the greats like 'Gimme Shelter' and the list is long so I'll save everyone the time reading it. Bottom line is that you won't be disappointed in this film regardless of whether or not you like this band. Well, I guess if you have a serious dislike of this band, I'd doubt that you'd spend the money on it, but I'm serious - there is no better way for those who don't like this band to have an opportunity to see the band, warts and all and save judgment until then. Hey, I'm just sayin'... FIVE STARS!!! Cheers!!!Read full review
Well, what else can you expect? This is Metallica at their best. On one DVD, you can follow the band through the recording of the Black album to the year and a half of touring. In all honestly, it was probably close to THREE years of touring to promote the self titled album album. I owned this video on VHS when I was 12 years old, and it inspired me to become a musician. Watching it again after 8 or 9 years still brings back the old Metallica glory days. This DVD is a great buy for you true Metallica fans. Part one and two are included on one DVD, and there is plenty of footage to spare. This DVD also includes all of the videos released on MTV for the Black album. Disk 1 includes Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters. Disk Two includes Nothing else Matters, Harvester of Sorrow, For whom the Bell Tolls, and other great footage of the band live. Another interesting aspect is the Freddie Mercury AIDS tribute, Metallica/Guns and Roses tour, and James Hetfield suffering a pyrotechnics burn. You can really get great insight of the band and their production. Good buy.Read full review
What I like about "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica"? That's easy -- it's an excellent and informative, not to mention highly entertaining look at this band for a year and a half of their lives! Along with the amazing music, which I love, it shows the guys and others (producer, sound guy, etc.) the way (I'm assuming) they really are. It gives such an insight into the lives of these guys. I'm assuming they're not actors, therefore, they were being themselves. They're funny, obviously quite irreverent .... what can I say? They're funny! I laughed so much while watching this -- it was almost like watching a comedic movie! The DVD also includes concert footage, some of the band's videos, along with the day-to-day goings on in the studio, etc. As I said, aside from the music, which is the main thing, I enjoyed every aspect of this DVD. It was real -- the guys in this band are real. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're a fan of Metallica, you really need to see this! If you can only by one Metallica DVD, buy this one!Read full review

This DVD goes into what Metallica went through in 1990-1992 during the recording of and touring of the "Black" album. It really gives a great glimpse of what they went through during the peak of their fame. I particularly enjoy the footage of the Metallica/Guns-N-Roses stadium tour! If you arw a fan of Metallica, this DVD is a no-brainer!
