After half a century in photography, my first and until recently only Nikon camera was a D800, which in 2012 made me abandon film and go digital for serious photography. Before that I worked with medium and large format film, and I sell my prints up to 8 feet wide, so I need the pixel count. However, lockdown boredom made me curious about some of the predecessors to my D800, and as they are now available for a song on eBay, I decided to try them out since I already have the lenses and other kit to use with them. And you know what? I love my new, old D200 and 300. Not for my largest prints, but they’re much better and more enjoyable than compacts for smaller scale photography. A dozen or so megapixels is fine for that, and fitted with a 35 or 50mm prime, they’re no bother to carry around. All right, not pocket sized, but in my film days, my walkabout camera was a Hasselblad, so a D200/300 with a small lens is no problem. In fact, it’s good to hold a proper tool in my hand instead of a dinky toy, and the DX crop turns my nifty fifty into an excellent and compact “75mm” portrait lens - lighter and less intimidating than an 85mm on the D800. I’m still glad I didn’t fork out thousands on these cameras back when they came out, but a decade and a half later it’s a different matter. Get yourself one for less than we used to spend on film in a week, have fun and make some nice pictures while you’re at it.Read full review

It's ok but not up to today's standards, picture quality is average. Good beginners camera but I only have it as a back up for my other Nikon.

This camera is one of the most underrated pieces of gear on the market! It sell for a ridiculously low price on ebay, and features a magnesium frame and 10 MP CCD sensor. The CCD sensor has a unique, excellent quality not found in modern CMOS sensors. Very well built and great image quality - I liked it so much that I bought (2)!!

After reading many other reviews, I decided to buy a Nikon D200 myself. It may be an older model, but the quality of photos I've taken so far is superb. Every control is just where it should be. I'm enjoying learning what it is capable of. An excellent camera to improve your DSLR skills on, without breaking the bank.
