About this product

Product Information

Stinger returned home one morning after a night out of town to a horrible surprise. A mysterious force had destroyed his coastal hometown, leaving few survivors. Unable to even determine the remains of his own house, the young man was now an orphan. Upon meeting a mystic named Windleaf, the two decided to embark upon a journey to find out what happened.

Their adventure in Shadow Madness will span across the entire fantastic world of Arkose, even to the unexplored area known as Wyldern. Meeting up with four other unique warriors along the way (the droid-like Harv-5, a magical floating head named Xero Von Moon, a cyborg-like Gadgeteer called Clemett and Wyldern-native Jirina), the group strives to seek out and destroy the source of Arkose's destruction.

In classic RPG style, they'll confront evil minions through random encounters, avoidable if the party hides quickly enough upon hearing the wild sounds of the enemy. After each successful encounter, the party is rewarded with experience points, often accompanied by gold and items useful to its journey. Once characters have enough experience points, they advance in level, increasing such abilities as attack strength, defense, agility (ability to evade attacks), prowess (ability to strike hits) and speed (how often they can attack).

In addition to having his or her own unique array of weapons, each character is skilled in a specific area. For instance, Stinger picks locks, while Harv-5's immunity power enables him to resist certain types of attacks (e.g., magic, poison and sleep) as he advances in experience. Other skills include gadgeteering (Clemett's ability to fix broken machinery and increase his Multicannon's effectiveness) and spellcasting, utilized by Xero, Windleaf and Jirina.

Aside from the main quest, the adventurers will embark upon several mini-quests that offer variety to standard RPG action. Some of the more notable include their passage to Wyldern in a submarine, a first-person shooter style of gaming in the Gadgeteer Simulators, and operation of a catapult to bring down an enemy stronghold.

Shadow Madness boasts 40 hours of gameplay on two discs. A third is included in first-run copies of the game with a playable demo of Jade Cocoon.

    A very under-rated rpg!

A lot of people say negative things about this game. It was listed in one of the top five worst rpg's of all time. BUT, I say nay-nay! The combat and graphics are not it's strong point, but the writing is where it shines! Great story with a lot of humor. I had some good laugh-out-loud moments! Story is fun and the characters are pretty cool. The pre-rendered backgrounds are nice. To show how much I like this game I bought it again because I felt like playing it again. Plus this is one of the few rpg's I ever finished, and that's saying a lot because I've started a lot and never finished them. So forget the negative reviews and give it a chance!

  • Mimes still creep me out...

This American-made game is overlooked for a lot of reasons. The graphics weren't as good as Final Fantasy VII, the gameplay was essentially barebones RPG, and your characters had a bunch of techniques that were never explained. This is a shame, seeing as this is easily one of the funniest games I've ever played. The writing is where this game truly shines...many laugh out loud moments and silly situations helped offset the grim mood of the game. The combat, while laden with a bunch of oddly named spells, was easily on par with Final Fantasy. Timed button pressed would let some characters take a second swing at the enemies, and the summon spells (once you figured out which ones they were) were easily as impressive as those in Final Fantasy. Pick this game up if you like RPGs and could ...

  • greatest crappy game ever

Shadow Madness is a great RPG by Crave (the same people who made jade cocoon) fun game play great storyline and crappy graphics...compared to now. The world is huge there is a lot of items to pick up. The characters are fun and interesting and the combat system is a little different from any rpg's Ive seen but its enjoyable. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants to immerse them selves into a new world and put a good 30 or more hours of game play into another game (the side quest will keep you busy).

  • A child hood favorite from a non fan of RPG

As a young teen I had trouble reading, but this game had a subtle sense of dark humor that kept me interested. I spent weekend after weekend playing it, but never beat it. Now I'm back for revenge as an adult!
