About this product

Product Information

Norman Stone's groundbreaking book was the very first authoritative account of the Russian Front in the First World War to be published in the West. In this now-classic history he dispels the myths surrounding a still relatively little-known aspect of the war, showing bow inefficiency rather than economic shortage led to Russia's desperate privations and eventual retreat. He also reinterprets the connection between the war and the chaos that followed, arguing that although fighting had almost ceased by the end o f 1916, Russia was still in turmoil - undergoing a period of change that would inexorably lead towards revolution.

It is true that the Eastern Front 1914-18 is badly neglected by western scholars and this is shameful. But Stone's work is neither groundbreaking nor interesting, really turgid style yet flips about constantly. Tedious detail of plans give very little insight into the actualities of the war and its character. One has the suspicion that Stone like so many dull academics, saw an 'opportunity' to 'do' the Eastern Front and so he did it but not out of conviction or interest but out of self-interest. Disappointing and rarely offers anything other than going through the academic motions. Stilted, lifeless and the conceit of the author is oppressive.
