It takes the mystery out of historically accurate technique and presents it in a beautiful and achievable way, grounded in the authors' years of experience in hands-on research." -Cynthia Settje, Owner, Redthreaded Costumes & Corsets

  • A worthwhile book for anyone who is sewing 18th century clothing.

Beautiful book, generous with instructions and illustrations. Answered questions I didn't know I had. This type of sewing looks difficult for the non-sewing person (me), but the book is tremendously interesting and informative. Note that this is a book for hand work, not machine sewing. The garments require fitting to the wearer, and some draping, instead of just following patterns. Some of the garments look very difficult to achieve, like the gowns, but some, like the shift and pockets and neckerchiefs, seem simple to cut and stitch. This is a worthwhile book for anyone who is sewing 18th century clothing.

  • Delicious details

Being fond of sewing by hand, this book provides clear instructions for daunting projects. Every item of several complete ensembles is separated with photos, history and helpful tips. Before this book I never would tackle an entire outfit by hand, and now I cannot wait to get started!

  • Historical Clothing

If you are going to hand make a garment from the 18th Century this would be your guide. It does include pattern, but too much hand work for me to do. I would rather use a sewing machine. It does detail the stitching, types of fabric used and linings. Fascinating historical information of the period.

At first appearance, the book looked fine and in good condition. But as soon as I took it out of the plastic bag it was in, the smell of cigarettes hit me. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the smell out with baking soda.
