About this product

Product Information

The Sunday Times Bestseller, and the biggest memoir of the year, from Britain's best loved food writer. 'Toast' is Nigel Slater's truly extraordinary story of a childhood remembered through food. Whether relating his mother's ritual burning of the toast, his father's dreaded Boxing Day stew or such culinary highlights of the day as Arctic Roll and Grilled Grapefruit (then considered something of a status symbol in Wolverhampton) this remarkable memoir vividly recreates daily life in sixties surburban England. His mother was a chops-and-peas sort of cook, exasperated by the highs and lows of a temperamental AGA, a finicky little son and the asthma that was to prove fatal. His father was a honey-and-crumpets man who could occasionally go off 'crack' like a gun. When Nigel's widowed father takes on a housekeeper with social aspirations and a talent in the kitchen, the following years become a heartbreaking cooking contest for his father's affections. But as he slowly loses the battle, Nigel finds a new outlet for his culinary talents, and we witness the birth of what was to become a lifelong passion for food. Nigel's likes and dislikes, aversions and sweet-toothed weaknesses form a fascinating and amusing backdrop to this incredibly moving and deliciously evocative memoir of childhood, adolescence and sexual awakening.

Earth Band Box Set by Manfred Manns Earth Band | CD | condition good. No picture, no description, so asked seller (Momox) for info. Told to check EAN number. Confirmed the product, but not condition and contents. Took their word for it! Package arrived (from Germany) and TBH it was wrapped ok, but box was about to split. Item is a wooden box containing 13 CDs in jewel cases (plus items), so was fairly robust, but catch missing from lid. Now understand why price was good. Items in good condition.

    Brutally Honest Book....Buy It!

Honest content to the point of shocking. He caught his dad knocking one out in the greenhouse. His Uncle Geoff sexually abused him by playing 'hide the sixpence', his mother died when he was nine and his subsequent step-mother mentally tortured him, his dad gave him regular beatings.....and he overcame it all to become a successful writer and tv personality. When he describes the food and sweets of his childhood it's like going back in time. Old English Spangles and Pascalls fruit bon-bons (the long rectangular ones with the chewy middle) christ I'm flooded with nostalgia.

  • Lovely book to cosy up with!

Nigel Slater must have a photographic memory as he is able to easily conjure up foods, tastes and labels familiar from my childhood. These memories made me smile. He is a natural storyteller and Toast is a charming recollection of his childhood memories. If you want to read a lovely little personal history with a smile this is the book for you!

  • Cracking read.

Cracking read. I thought Nigel Slater was a bit of a middle class ponce. This book gives an insight into what shaped the lad. Recommended.
