If you have at least one katana, this kit is a must, at the very least for the brass tool. The choji oil is pretty simple (mineral oil and clove oil in about a 50:1 ratio) and works well enough. it doesn't come with a lot, but it's used sparingly so it should last you for years. If you run out, straight mineral oil will work just as well. The cloths are durable, and hold the oil well; You put a used cloth in the plastic container that comes in the kit when done, and can use it again to re-oil a blade again later. once it becomes dirty, or if you use the uchiko (powder ball) first, you will need to replace it with one of the fresh cloths. The mallet is essential; You use this to remove and reinstall the mekugi (bamboo pins) from the tsuka (hilt) to thoroughly clean and oil the blade. I haven't used the powder ball, but this can be used in conjunction with an oiled cloth to polish out light scratches and light surface oxidization or rust; There better things to use (such as metal polishing creams) these days, but the fine whetstone dust from the powder ball, in conjunction with an oiled cloth following it up should do a decent job if you want to keep it traditional. Overall this is a fine sword care kit, and every sword collector should have one if they have at least one Japanese sword in their collection. It comes in a nice simple wooden box as well, which would look good alongside your sword if displayed on a table or desk.Read full review

Good quality, good price point. It's very basic, but more than adequate. Wonderful beginners kit. Very clean and well constructed wooden box. Simple, functional tools. Works great as an extra kit to quickly clean, or oil, on the go. You can buy better individual pieces, but you can not buy a complete kit of adequate quality at this price point. The nice little box is almost worth the price by itself. The quality of the oil is good, the paper isn't... rice paper is cheap and you need to buy rice paper anyway. Like ANY kit, you're buying the container and tools - they throw in a few pieces of paper just as a courtesy to show you where to store it. You don't throw out a first aid kit after you use 2 bandaids, you buy more, and better, bandaids. The oil will NOT last forever either, you're going to have to refill it, but you have a neat little bottle that fits in the kit. I like this kit. I recommend you buy this kit, and some rice paper. I'm not adding a photo, because I believe the add clearly depicts what you will receive. I got exactly everything in the photos.Read full review
