If you're into ultralight backpacking/hiking and titanium gizmos, then you've probably come across the Vargo Triad. This alcohol stove is scant in weight, well constructed, and has adjustable pot stand legs - which you don't find on many other alcohol stoves. It requires about 1.5 ounces of denatured alcohol to get it started, but you can use one of the bottom legs as a spout to save any unburned fuel. I call it a fun UL stove because it has an aesthetically pleasing design, titanium, and you just want to own one. But, it does have some functionality issues. It blows out really easily and requires 1.5 ounces to be loaded to start it (needs a primer pool in concave well). So, you need a windscreen for sure and moderate weather conditions for it to stay lit and to focus the flame. If you're down to 1 ounce of fuel, you can't light it (unless you plug the well hole and hope the pool has enough heat for a 1 cup boil). A plus is that you can flip the Triad upside down and use the flat side to hold as Esbit tablet. I give it 4 stars for it's fun factor and nifty concept, and you'll definitely want to use when you can.Read full review

Effectively this is a high quality penny stove without the penny. The advantage is the weight and size. The drawback is the fact that there is no way of filling this from an ordinary fuel bottle without ending up with fuel all over the place and not much in the stove. The central filler hole is so small that in order to fill it you have to put tiny drops into the stove which is not possible from and ordinary bottle unless the bottle is almost empty. The only way to avoid this is to buy one of the bulky trangia bottles with a spout or to use an expensive (and does not carry much) Vargo bottle. Once going it works well in ideal conditions but it is not a player when trying to fill it in the freezing cold half way up a mountain in the driving wind. It desperately needs a rethink so that it can be filled without wasting so much fuel.Read full review

I plan on putting this stove into my vehicle emergency backpack. Living in Michigan and being on the roads in all kinds of conditions, there is a definite need for something like this. I don't want to get stuck in a several hour traffic accident back-up with nothing to eat. This stove fits perfect along with quart of fuel in to the back pack. The water and freeze dried food gives me the comfort I would need to sustain a long back up.
