Solidly made, nice size, good reception even in my rural area. Yes understanding digital trunked systems take some time to grasp unless you have been following this for several years, but this radio is picking up stations towns away even with the stock rubber ducky. Hint-don't bother with all the other supposedly better portable antennas unless you get an elevated base-station antenna with horizontal and vertical elements high on a mast-my reception is no better for short or long-distance with several different base-loaded and telescoping antennas. Almost all scanner freqs are FM and line-of-sight or reflected propagation. One major problem-after hours of research, the USB cable would not install properly in windows 7 tried several versions of 7 on several laptops, could not use it to connect, until I found the exact IC used in the cable-and had to get the exact driver package from Infineon's website, it is a Cypress CY7C652 series chip, and the Whistler drivers, FTDI drivers, older Prolific drivers, nothing else worked, except this Infineon driver package. I had to disassemble the cable module to inspect the chip!!!! The driver has to create a serial port to USB bridge for this particular IC and none of the other drivers worked, although apparently other ops haven't had a problem with this cable (I think). Was maddening and Whistler needs to be taken to task for this major foobar with their usb cable. Now I can interface with PSR500, ARC500 or Win500 perfectly-FYI-it creates com port 9 for some strange reason-all the other ports are used, but by what I could not say. Windows 7 failed to find the right driver too and 10 is supposedly worse. if you need the driver message me at eBay.Read full review

If you're on a tight budget, this is a nice scanner for the money and it works on all the systems in the area where it will be used primarily, but it's not compatible with all trunking system types. Battery indicator is useless and does not display currently battery levels. It only seems to display an empty battery icon moments before your batteries are dead. I'm using NiMH batteries with the scanner, and have made the appropriate setting changes in the radio to charge them when plugged in to the AC adapter, but it doesn't seem to charge the batteries very well. Aside from that, I like the unit, but if I ever decide to replace it, I'll likely select a more advanced model.

I have owned many other older scanners in the past and that is why I love this model so much. It fits my hand and I have immediate access to any of programmed objects immediately to monitor, review, edit or anything I want to do. Unlike some that only have a very limited control panel that challenge every move you make it seems. Easy to program new entries or edit what you already have. Sound from the speaker is good but depends on the reception too. Most of the time it is very clear and crisp sounding. The antenna included is not the best at all. If you can upgrade the antenna keep it short for the higher frequencies. I have a telescoping antenna which is great for the lower frequencies but I can interchange it for the higher frequencies. I do recommend this model Whistler WS-1040 as long as you have both PS-25 and analog interests in your neighborhood. If only Phase 2 is in your area, you can spend more on a scanner but do your research! Otherwise you can spend a bunch of money on something you may not be happy with. Than what do you do? Research on line vid's and you can learn a lot! Thanks!Read full review

First, I can say I like this scanner, the only bummer for me is my local police use encrypted frequencies, my bad should have looked into that...but still this WS 1040 works really good for all the other things I can listen too that are not encrypted...and there is a lot...I went to youtube to figure out how to program it by hand, the programing software out there won't work with my Linux system...the other thing I figured out after the purchase is the age of this scanner, it has been out for some time, but at this price point and the features it has it is still a good option...even new scanners of greater cost can not crack the encrypted stuff...I like the SAME feature that alerts to weather events, got mine set for tornado warnings...this refurbish looks like new, came with everything the new ones come with...I have to mention the little card that said this scanner only has a 90 day warranty..E-bay says it's 2 yrs....who freakin knows, it works...it replaced my 20+ yr old Radio Shack Pro 23, which still works...take a chance, I'm happy with it.Read full review
