About this product

Product Information

Akira Kurosawa's DREAMS consists of eight short films based on actual dreams of the director. The first sequence, "Sunshine Through the Rain," features a young boy sneaking off into the forest on a rainy day to watch a procession of enchanted foxes. In "The Peach Orchard," a slightly older boy witnesses tree spirits performing a delicate dance. Weary travelers in "The Blizzard" face the elemental wrath of a snow enchantress, while "The Tunnel" finds a military officer haunted by the ghosts of his dead regiment. In "Crows," an art aficionado literally walks into the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese). "Mount Fuji in Red" and "The Weeping Demon" are both fantastical cautionary tales about the hazards of nuclear power. Finally the gentle "Village of the Watermills" brings the film to a quiet, pastoral end.A highly personal project, DREAMS evinces its labor-of-love atmosphere in every sequence. As with all Kurosawa productions, each short film is meticulously designed and beautifully photographed. While many of the middle sequences are eerie and surreal, the first two films and the finale ("Sunshine Through the Rain," "The Peach Orchard," and "Village of the Watermills") are gorgeously lush and serene.

    • Kurosawa's Dreams is vivid modern Japanese culture

The more you know about Japanese culture and history the more awesome this movie will be. This is really Dreams loosely connected by Kurosawa's own genius. The dream where the camera takes you into a Van Gogh painting is fantastic The foxes wedding is a dream based on folk lore. The nuclear holocaust dream is, like any great war tale, appalling. And the other dreams are just as fascinating.

    • DREAMS by Akira Kurosawa

A really quick review. It is basically a retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear, with a Japanese twist. This is one of Kurosawa's later works. But that doesn't mean that it is run of the mill. Nothing Kurosawa does is run of the mill. The characters are outstanding, and is the cinematography. Another plus for Kurosawa films. I do have to let you know that this film runs almost 3 hours long. Considering that again it is a Kurosawa film it is not unusual. He takes his time to develop his characters and to weave a tale that will entice the viewer into his story. If you have a collection not only of Kurosawa, but in greats films altogether, You really should have this film in your collection. It really is worth watching even just once. If you are like me you will be watching it several times.

    • Extraordinary glimpse into old Japanese ideas......and dreams.

Stunning film - the second and the last segments were my favorites. Visual effects, costuming, music.......each segment was unique and I was enthralled almost start to finish.

    • One of the most culturally significant films of our time! Thank goodness it’s out on DVD now!

Has there ever been a collection of stories that so beautifully presents the ethos of Japan? The vision of the writer and director are vividly indelibly depicted from majestic floral forests, glistening snow, dewdrops, rainbows and blowing peach blossoms. He plays with our perpectives as well as our perceptions and his bit on Van Gogh was provocative and must have been really hard to shoot. There are dark warnings as well, about honesty, integrity, and Kirasawa has a strong message for us about our 🌏Environment. We only have one Earth! Furthermore, it’s a schoolteacher’s DREAM!!! It transcends language, it covers art, science, ethical, and social concerns and is a must-see for all. 🌈Once you see Kirasawa’s Dreams, you will not forget them.

    • Good title......clear, concise and to the point.

Great visuals for the interpretation of dreams. Well paced with each story/vignette about 20-22 minutes or so.
