  • Great Action and Visuals; Weak Character Development

Come Drink With Me is one of the better martial arts movies. Based on the other Shaw Brothers movie I watched, I sense they put more thought into making a movie than most Chop Suey makers. It has a plot that allows the characters to be smart, have humorous moments, and engage in great fights. The character development was weak and depended on stock villains and heroes. I think it would be harder to enjoy the movie if you weren't up on Chinese Kung Fu mythology. The visuals were great with stunning backgrounds, well planned scenes and costuming. Oh I forgot to mention that the female lead engages in most of the fighting and is great if you like watching women best men because of their Kung Fu skills.

  • DATED BUT IMPORTANT VIEWING FOR COLLECTORS

If you don't know the history of this film, then let me quickly say that it is one of the most important films from the Shaw Brothers film catalog. That being said, it's probably best suited for collectors than it is for the general public. It has become very dated, especially the clunky action sequences, obviously since it was shot in 1966. One must take into account that the filmmakers were experimenting with moving away from the wu xsia (sword fighting) epics and beginning thew eventually trend of "chop sockey" hand to hand films. If you appreciate excellent cinematography however, you will not be disappointed. As has been pointed out ad nauseum, this film inspired the character in the Kill Bill series.

  • Over rated "classic" SB film

The reviews & description of this film claim it to be "a revelation in martial arts filmmaking"& "may be the most influential martial arts film of all time." These comments must have been made at least 30 years ago but no longer hold true when you compare COME DRINK WITH ME to other SB classic martial arts films such as THE DEADLY DUO(1971) & 5 SHAOLIN MASTERS(1974). Don't buy this dvd if you are looking for 'jaw-dropping'fights & fast-paced kung fu action. You will be sorely disappointed. The film moves slowly & the action is rather sparse. Lead actress Cheng Pei-Pei does more posturing than perform any real martial arts. Her fighting skills in this film do not even come close to Brigette Lin & Maggie Cheung in DRAGON INN or Michelle Yeoh in WING CHUN. The best action comes from her ...

  • Come drink With Me

This is a classic that was better in 1966 than today: But then again, cars are better today then they were in 1966. Glad to have seen it again as I have serached for it for years. If you love the genre, you will appreciate the film. The quality of the film was excellent and it was colorized; not necessarily a good thing as it changed the mood and effects of the film. I actually preferred the black and white original. All in all, the film was in- expensive and worth a spot in my library for occasional reflections of where I was when I first saw it and the memories if sparked.
