A cute Christmas story about Charles Dickens' inspiration for his novel. The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017) is a rather charming historical fantasy portrayal of the inspiration and motivations behind Charles Dickens writing A Christmas Carol. That narrative blends Dickens' intriguing childhood of misfortune and trauma with his present misery and financial struggles. Although, the film is rather straightforward and basic, I found it warm and fun instead of empty and sentimental alone. I do not know how historically accurate much of the movie is, but it presents itself as real other than Dickens' manic creative spring episodes of writing with a vision of his characters. Dan Stevens is just so charming and likable as Charles Dickens that you really feel at home with his character. He seems like a decent enough man trying his best, and Stevens portrays him realistically as such. Stevens proves himself to be versatile in his acting yet again. From the tender family man and charitable philanthropist, to the mad author and grumpy artist. He plays it all! I really enjoyed the supporting cast as well. Christopher Plummer plays an excellently cruel and miserly Scrooge. While Jonathan Pryce is one of my favorite aspects of The Man Who Invented Christmas. Pryce plays Dickens' silly and shady father figure with a caring heart and earnest joy. His dramatic depth is evident in his interactions with Stevens. You just laugh and smile while Pryce is on screen. Overall, The Man Who Invented Christmas may give you some insight into the life of Charles Dickens, but it is mostly an entertaining depiction of the various inspirations behind the world of A Christmas Carol. The reenactment of much of the book is quite delightful!Read full review

This is a very good family movie. My husband and I saw it first on a date night and then saw it again with our son, who keeps talking about how.much he likes it. It is the story of how Dickens developed his story for "A Christmas Carol" at a time when he had debts that threatened to claim everything he owned and his publishers were losing faith in his ability to turn out another literary hit,. The book became a phenomenonon that would change the way we celebrate Christmas. Good language and plot that moves along. One reservation: the graveyard scenes might scare younger children.

We watched this movie as a family and everyone enjoyed it. The story flows well and the characters are very engaging. It is especially interesting to see how different events and names came together in his mind to create the story of Scrooge that we all know and love. Our viewing family included children, 6 and 10, young adult 16, their parents and the grandparents. We will all watch it again and again just like Scrooge.

This DVD is so enchanting and very enjoyable. I checked it out from our local library last Christmas and when I saw this good price on eBay, I knew I wanted my own copy. I intend to make it a Christmas tradition and watch it every year. I loved watching Charles Dickens discuss his work with Ebenezer Scrooge. What a clever idea for a idea. I highly recommend this DVD.

This is a very well made movie. If you have been a fan of "A Christmas Carol" it actually tracks with the story. It was a great idea coming up with a background story of how Charles Dickens came up with the idea for this classic story. The acting is excellent and I like the "verbatim" quotes that eventually made their way into the original story.
