I bought this mower, an earlier model than in this review picture by the way, partly because we have recently moved into a house with relatively large lawns, and partly for nostalgic reasons. I first used an even older model at the age of nine, this bought new by my best friend's father, and sort of grew up with it. I must point out that both my friend and I were probably about 5'+ by then but I wouldn't let a nine-year-old loose with one these days! I prefer petrol as there is none of the irritation of dragging a cable around and tripping over it, nor the risk of running over it. Also it will go anywhere on more or less level ground, again because there is no cable. These are available as 12", 14", and 17" variants; don't be tempted to go bigger than you need to speed up mowing. If your lawns are not quite large turning will be a problem. Look out for Atco variants, essentially the same product with a 'posh' badge (VW/Skoda!) Very early models have a dog clutch which engages the roller drive; it is either in or out. When in the centrifugal clutch runs both blades and drive so if you shut down to stop the blades stop also. Taller users can overcome this by simply lifting the back roller off the ground! Mine and later models have a cable operated clutch to the roller which can, with a hand lever, be engaged or not while the blades still run at full power; useful when trimming round irregular borders. I would definitely buy this again and another similar if necessity dictated.Read full review
the 35s and its bigger brother the 43s are pretty much the same as the previous 14s and 17s machines. they all use the QX cassette system to quickly remove the cutter blade or scarifier unit and have the same tecumseh engines....unless you're lucky enough to buy one fitted with a kawasaki, which is way superior but also way more expensive. like all machines, these have good points and bad points. they are perfect for maintaining flat, bowling green style lawns, are easy to use, easy to adjust, reliable and generally not too bad to live with. however, they are expensive to service and don't for god's sake run them into anything (kerbs, tree stumps etc.) or take them up and down steps without ramps. your lawn will also need to be cleared of all obstacles before mowing....the QX system is a good idea, but is easily damaged. the drive gears to the cylinder are plastic, and shatter if you hit sticks or stones. they aren't expensive as parts but are a pain to replace. also, the drive to the rear roller will last for years under normal use, but if you bash it, it will break instantly! this IS expensive, and is also a pain to change. so buy one if you have a flat, clean lawn. and a nice dry shed. and some ramps if you have steps. and are willing to clean the mower once in a while. and as with all mowers, don't try to use last year's petrol....IT WILL NOT BURN!Read full review
My Dad always had Ransomes cylinder mowers. These are equal quality to those. They cut beautifully if used properly and not neglected. They are not for cutting long wet grass. If you regularly mow your lawn and it is a flat lawn then these are the best for the job. The roller flattens small undulations which is great.
