Notes
This never-before-heard jazz classic documents one of the most historically important bands in all of jazz history. This is the first professionally recorded full-length album by two of jazz's preeminent legends at the height of their powers. This beautifully-recorded concert has been brilliantly restored and mastered, capturing both the power and nuance of Mon and Trane.

    Jazz Masters in Concert

An extraordinary and historic performance from two of the giants of jazz. According to the extensive liner notes, this rare concert by Monk and Trane was part of a community fundraiser at Carnegie Hall. The concert, entitled Thanksgiving Jazz. also featured Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Holiday, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles and Chet Baker. This CD presents the portion of that concert which featured the compositions of Thelonious Monk and the "sheets of sound " associated with master saxophonist John Coltrane. A highly recommended addition to any serious jazz collection.

  • Great notes, inspired music

There are notes by four different Monk/Coltrane experts, detailing the relationship between the two and, in one instance, talking about some of the higlights of much of the concert. And the recording quality is excellent. You can also hear two versions of epistrophy (one of them only partial) that were recorded the same night...one for the early show and the other for the late show....and get an idea as to how 'free' the two of them were as you hear the significant differences in their performance.
