The film is a classic Cold War thriller, Excellently Written and acted, Especially to be looked out for are the performances of Lawrence Harvey as the Brainwashed Manchurian Candidate and Angela Lansbury His Red Controller, who is also his Mother, I think they both give terrific performances certainly among their career best. The casting & other performances were all excellent. The Direction & DVD Reproduction are great. This is a still my favourite version, although the later Denzil Washington Film is also very good, I still prefer the Korean war backdrop and cold war, communist infiltration & brainwashing subtext, which is not far from the truth of actual 1950's events, & some characters. Such as the communist plant, the Heinz 57 Senator, who is redolent of Joseph McCarthy. It's Simply in a class of it's own & not to be missed.Read full review

First saw this in the 70s and was impressed - thought l would revisit . Unfortunately it's now very dated and Laurence Harvey is too English to be convincing as the anti hero/victim. Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh's blossoming romance is also rather too fast (though presumably has to be to fit the script.) However the plot is ingenious and Angela Lansbury is genuinely menacing as the psychotic mother. lts very much a film of its time, like Doctor "Strangelove", but for conspiracy theorists its worth a look on a rainy day

This film was quite a kin to tales of unexpected, very engaging and quite dark at times but the characters seemed so believable.
