    Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene 7-13 (1997)

    I'm a "pernament" Jarre fan since the autumn of 2007. A few weeks ago I decided to get all of his albums in all types of release (CD, LP, etc.). Although I have them on my computer, I would like to have it physically too. His album Oxygene 7-13 (released in 1997) is different from the original Oxygene (released in 1977) album. It has it's own unique "sounds of the nature" (rain, wind, etc.) and also got a bit techno in it.

    "Oxygene 7-13" by Jean-Michel Jarre (1997)

    Typical Jarre with his revolutionary use of synthesisers and electronics. Oxygene 7 almost has a space feel to it, leading us on an adventure though new worlds in relative calmness. Conversely, Oxygene 8 is more dramatic with a punchy bass line. We are returned on Oxygene 9 with long drawn-out pads and some rather spooky electronics. Oxygene 11 seems to be a bit of a mix and I found it a bit overwhelming but the pace returns in Oxygene 12. Oxygene 13 adds a bit of a Flamenco style to the album with some backup percussion. Overall, a bit slow for my liking but certainly an album which appears to display a wide variety of Jarre.

    More O² is not necessarily better.

    Being a fan of JMJ does not dull the ability to recognize when He's resting on his laurels and not being particularly creative. To be sure, all the tracks on this disc are good, but none are exceptional. He does play with his original Oxygen themes with a sense of browny like impishness, which can be fun. But on the whole this disc does not break any new ground or make you want for more.
