One of 2 great ghost stories

I think that there are 2 great ghost stories. The Uninvited is one of them...both the female and male leads are somewhat heroic...they are more fascinated by the ghost than they are terrified. This is one of few old movies that does not depict the female lead as a stumbling and screaming pretty face. The second great ghost story is one with George C. Scott, the Changeling. That movie is an outstanding ghost story for the same reasons. Two great movies for Halloween.

    Pretty Good

I love old movies, especially thrillers. I had read a review of The Uninvited and was excited to watch it. The story line is expected, the haunted house and the quest to find out the ghost's story, but I found the movie had a lightheartedness to it that, for me, took away from what could have been a really scary movie. It was a nice movie, good acting and scenery, your sort of typical old movie feel, so still definitely worth watching.

  • The first great ghost story which became a classic.

The Uninvited is a ghost story of exceptional class. Ray Milland does an admirable job and 19 year old Gail Russell in her first big screen role was quite good in spit of her budding drinking problem that eventually killed her too early. This film is not only a classic but also the true beginning of the genre. And the theme "Stella By Starlight" has maintained it's beauty throughout the years. I love this film.

  • Superior movie

My favorite scary movie. Ray Milland and his sister buy a haunted house and solve a mystery for a beautiful young neighbor. Beautiful set decor, fabulous cinematography, excellent acting. Nothing gruesome in this one.

  • Enjoyable, atmospheric, mysterious, but not scary.

This is an excellent film, although don't expect a horror movie in the modern sense of the word. There is no blood, no gore, and no moments that will have the audience jumping and screaming. It is more of a mystery with a supernatural element. Once the main characters realize their house is haunted, they don't scream hysterically. They decide to uncover the reason the ghost is hanging around, and banish it if possible. This seems to be a very logical, practical approach, especially for 1944. Of course, the ghostly manifestations are not dangerous in and of themselves. The scent of mimosa, a mysteriously cold room, the sound of weeping at night, and even a transparent floating head are unsettling, but not terrifying. The house seems to have power over a young woman who lived ...
