These films are an amazing document of one of the most historical of modern Olympic Games. The film opens with a very artistic interlude that seeks to revive the ancient Greeks through creative photography focused on their architecture and art, and transitions to the first performance of the Olympic Torch & Flame at the modern games (a tradition that continues to the present day). These films were financed as a propaganda effort, but the magnitude of the greatness of the Olympic competition completely eclipses the rampant nationalism exhibited by both the audience members & the German government. I try to imagine the impact of these films on 1930's audiences (who had not been raised with televised Olympic Games), but I can only wonder. The Games were well documented here. I can't imagine how many meters of film were shot to get this complete coverage. The editing is superlative. I think these documentaries should be required viewing for fans of the Olympic Games and sports photography in general. The transfers are good quality, but the only drawback is the lack of any subtitles (The film is in German). This wasn't a problem for me since I understand German. The films are pretty clear as to the action; so the language may not be a total deal breaker, but if you don't speak German think twice.Read full review
