    Brilliantly produced and acted!

I've been looking for this series for years; this is a glorious production collection of Shakespeare's plays, at location, with brilliant actors. I'm SO glad I have these in my library!

  • Shakespeare you can understand!!!

The BBC productions, "The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses" covers Henry VI part 1 in one production, Henry IV part 2 and 3 in the second play, and the and Richard III in the third. This plays are beautifully and skillfully done. Unlike so many others, where the actors see to spit out a stream of words that they do not seems understand, or make understandable, these actors speak the words conversationally and take the time to convey the meaning. Very entertaining and enjoyable, engaging characterizations--Shakespeare for everyman. Also and Absolute must for fans of Benedict Cumberbatch, who starts as Richard III and has a prominent part in "Henry IV, part 2 and 3". Hugh Bonneville of Downton Abby fame is excellent in Henry iv part 1.

  • TRUNCATED PRODUCTION

A great production marred by too many cuts to the texts of the Henry VI trilogy. Cuts make play harder to follow. Recommend earlier BBC productions without cuts.

  • Really exciting

For me Shakespeare is either hit or miss. Few things are as boring as Shakespeare done badly. But Shakespeare done well is truly approaching the height of western culture. This production of The Hollow Crown is the latter. Whether you liked The White Queen series or not this series is well worth checking out as a “prequel” companion series telling the story of the origins of the Wars of the Roses. And Tom Sturridge doesn’t get enough credit for his portrayal of Henry VI. Bravo!
