Tower of Power is the gold standard/Rolls Royce of "horn bands". This DVD is from their 1998 tour that is also available in similar form on CD as "Soul Vaccination-Tower of Power Live!" released the same year. The audio isn't the greatest and the camera work leaves a little to be desired but with such a small amount of video available for Tower, this is worth investing in. The music speaks for itself and if you own the CD you can mentally fill-in for the lack of engineering. From an engineering and post production viewpoint, the horn section could be louder or better blended at times and the vocals could have been occasionally scaled back. I'm sure the audio was not taken from the band's mixing board. I almost did not purchase this DVD because of other reviews that blasted the audio. If memory serves, one review read said something like the audio sounded like it was recorded on a cassette tape recorded from the back of the room. Not really. I'm glad I decided to give it a try. It isn't that bad, really. What this does do is showcase an amazing band who (less than perfect audio aside) actually sounds the same if not better live as it does in the studio, even without the aid of studio recording "tricks". Of course, it certainly can't make up for energy transmitted by actually seeing them live, but as stated earlier, you take what you can get. In the days of full production stage shows with dancers, acrobats and the like which are mostly designed to distract from a lack of musicianship, the realization that bad, often violent, monotone rhyme really isn't music and simply lack of music in general, it's satisfying to know that music really isn't dead. The actual performance is nothing flashy, visually. TOP lets their music speak for itself. And it does. This video showcases master MUSICIANS displaying their craft. The show IS the music. And what a show that is. Tower of Power-In Concert...it isn't perfect and could have been done better from a production standpoint. But the preservation of this band on video is music to my ears and eyes.Read full review
i don,t deny that tower of power is one of my favorites when it comes to the jazzy sentimental side. but tell you, it would have been better if they mixed some old selections like you,re still a young man, below us all the city lights,i won,t leave unless you want me to and some other past selections. i don,t know whatever happened to the old soloist (is his name lenny williams?). anyway, the instrumentals, the horns and the style is still there, and the splendid sound distinct from rock music. well, more power to you tower of power.
if you are a Tower Fan. you will love this concert. Tower of power has always put on a great concert you can never be disappointed in any of Tower concert. every time I have seen them. I have always come out of their concerts knowing I have just seen a good show.if you are also a horn player you can appreciate the great horn section they have. the music is great. the rhythm section will move you.the music will make you appreciate the great musicianship that is in the band.if you are in to good rhythm music. then this is the band you should see. if you can not see them live in concert.then this DVD is the next best thing.... sincerely Russell LaFuente ( Guro Russ ) guroruss@juno.com
I first heard of them in my late teens 1971, but I never saw them, so this was a great and affordable way to get to know them.

Best Raw Live Stage Recording at that time! This album is the 30th anniversary in 1998 "Soul Vaccination". When I was sitting in the studio and put this bad boy on it knocked me out. Just sheer, full, soulful, funk style horn band firing on all cylinders! The 1st spot trumpet player Dr. Jesse McGuire killed it. I mean sheer raw energy and if the Viet Nam war had not gotten in the way the very cool horn band I was playing in during the 60's would be out there with a probably NOT as good recording as this one! It smokes!
