About this product

Product Information

Sultana is a Saudi Arabian, princess, a woman born to fabulous, uncountable wealth. She has four mansions on three continents, her own private jet, glittering jewels, designer dresses galore. But in reality she lives in a gilded cage. She has no freedom, no vote, no control over her own life, no value but as a bearer of sons. Hidden behind her black floor-length veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband, her sons, and her country. Sultana is a member of the Saudi royal family, closely related to the king. For the sake of her daughters, she has decided to take the risk of speaking out about the life of women in her country, regardless of their rank. She must hide her identity for fear that the religious leaders in her country would call for her death to punish her honesty. Only a woman in her position could possibly hope to escape from being revealed and punished, despite her cloak of anonymity. She tells of her own life, from her turbulent childhood to her arranged marriage - a happy one until her husband decided to displace her by taking a second wife - and of the lives of her sisters, her friends, and her servants. Although they share affection, confidences and an easy camaraderie within the confines of the women's quarters, they also share a history of appalling oppressions, everyday occurrences that in any other culture would be seen as shocking human rights violations: thirteen-year-old girls forced to marry men five times their age, young women killed by drowning, stoning, or isolation in the "woman's room", a padded, windowless cell where women are confined with neither light nor conversation until death claims them. Servants are forced into sexual servitude andseverely beaten if they attempt escape. By speaking out, Sultana risks bringing the wrath of the Saudi establishment upon her head and the heads of her children. In the barren, hopeless wasteland that is the life of Saudi women today, free speech is punishable by death. But by telling her story to a Western writer, Sultana has allowed us to see beyond the veils of this secret society, to the heart of a nation where sex, money, and power reign supreme.

  • Heavy, but worth it!

This is a very good book that is also hard to enjoy. It's hard to enjoy because for all that it is well written, the real-life characters are enchanting, and the backdrop is exotic - it is still very difficult to read. This is not a light read - it is very heavy. I finished it very quickly, in just a few days, and that was several months ago - but the stories are still haunting me and my mind continually returns to it. If you love reading of women overcoming adversity, you will love and despise many characters in this book. If you enjoy reading romance, you will feel the bittersweet double edged sword of the love in this book. Whether you enjoy fiction or non-fiction, you will be enchanted by this book. It is a heavy read, it is hard to digest and impossible to forget - it is ...

  • A compelling read about the violation of basic human rights.

This is a mind-blowing story about a princess in Saudi Arabia. Women are mistreated, abused, and violated in ways that we cannot even imagine. It describes how women live day-to-day in a society where women are subservient to men- husbands, brothers, fathers, and sons. They have no rights and life is quite bleak for them.

  • Didn't stop reading until I finished it!

The story is so touching & grabbed me from page one. I started & seriously didn't put it down until I was done. It was so compelling it touched me in such a personal level as a woman & a human being. You would never think such atrocities exist for so many innocent people. All because of where they were born & the gender God gave them. I truly understand the saying "Money cannot buy happiness." This book opens your eyes & your heart over & over again. So lucky to have read it. I'm now on book two.

  • Princess by Jean P. Sasson

This book is a peek through the secret lives of women in Saudi Arabia. It's shocking, riveting...I could not put the book down. In the end, I felt such a sadness for those women, and how their lives are considered so unimportant-the culture does not record birth/death dates for women. When her mother was buried in an unmarked grave in the desert, I felt such sorrow. Great book for expanding knowledge of cultures and the triumph of the human spirit despite great tragedies. TRUE story to boot. Wonderful read.

  • Highly recommended

Gives an incredible insight into life in a country that has always seemed mysterious. Unfortunately, treatment & attitude toward women is still in the dark ages. The Princess who shared the information for the book was sparkling & enlightening.
