STOP You MUST read ERAGON BEFORE listening to or reading this incredible book I read Eragon and really liked it. I listened to Eldest and LOVED it. The author has a great knack for drawing the complete picture in your imagination. Real characters who you feel like you know them. Gerard Doyle, the man who reads the book to you gives the characters life and feeling, he gives each of the many characters their own voice, and his British accent really adds to the whole ambience that is created while listening to this story. The only thing I don't like about this trilogy, the third book isn't available yet. I highly recommend that you first read Eragon or you'll just be lost on the whole storyline.
If you think a great story has to have a lot of violence and action, you will NOT like this book. I Loved it because of that reason. It's a story of patience, perseverence, generosity, self reflexion, and if you read between the lines, a great philosophical message. It's delivered in a falsly naive package, through Eragon's seemingly innocent questions - religions, politics, ethics, love, war and relationships, everything is questioned and some of the answers are a very sharp critic of our own society... Those are all the questions young adults sometimes struggle with and Christopher/Eragon is no exception. His answers show a lot of maturity for such a young age. Now if you want to judge it from your old, cynical and closed mind, you might find some of the answers naive or immature... But I would like to know how many books YOU wrote by the time you were 20... I found this book positively refreshing and courageous and I could not wait to get to the end, and now I can't wait for the next one.Read full review
This series is even more astounding when you learn the age of the author at the time he began writing this adventure. We ALL LOVE it. The whole family thoroughly enjoys every book in this series, that includes our 11 yr old son! We are dying to listen to the last book (the 4th) which for some reason is being held back from it's poor fans! We are becoming impatient. We have been loyal Eragon fans from the get-go but waiting for a book to hit the shelves that was already finished a few years ago is painful! Hurry up Christopher! We're not getting any younger!
I loved this book! Eldest is a continuation of the first book in the Inheritance Trilogy, Eragon. In this book Eragon further develops his abilities as a dragon rider and his understanding of the world with help from the elves. While this is happening Eragon’s home town comes under attack by the Ra’zac and soldiers from the Empire forcing the town to fight back. The book leads to a great battle between the Empire and the independent country of Surda who is trying to resist the evil ruler Galbatorix. The only bad part Eldest is that it leaves you hanging after some surprising revelations towards the end. The last book doesn’t have a release date yet but summer of 2007 seems most likely. I can’t wait!
I am a big fan of the Harry Potter series. A friend of mine turned me on to Eragon and Eldest. They are incredible! I listed to the unabridged CD version of both on my way to and from work. The voices are excellent. You know who is talking at any point in time. The story is captivating. You don't want to stop listening and look forward to the next time you can get in the car and hear another chapter. You must listen or read Eragon fist. Eldest picks up exactly where Eragon leaves off. I can not wait for the third book in thier series to be released.
