A Good Start on Learning Wild Edible Plants

After reading about several books on wild edible plants, I saw that many were disappointed with what they had bought. I saw that this book seemed to be more highly rated than most. I ordered it for my daughter and thumbed through it before giving it to her. It had some useful information that I immediate recognized. My daughter has no knowledge of these things and it will help her greatly. The many colored photos that I saw will be of great help in plant identification. Advice on which parts of the plants are edible is crucial.

  • Terrific book on edible plants.

One might ask "Why are there two pictures of two of the most violently toxic plants in North America (pokeweed and water hemlock) on the cover of a book on edible plants ?". The answer is, "Who knows ?". The difference however, is clearly made within. This is one of the most informative books on this particular subject I personally have ever read. The book is set up according to which plants are available during which season. Each species' detailed description is accompanied by a definitive full color (in most cases) photo, range map, harvest and preparation advice and, even recipes. The book also warns of poisonous lookalikes and has a great section on common poisonous plants in the back where, thankfully the two noxious species on the cover reside. ...

  • Great book to have. A must have tool for foraging and camping.

I bought this book to help with preparing foods on hiking/camping trips. I found that it catalogs plants mainly by seasons which is helpful for knowing which plants are edible during your trip. This book does detail each edible plant well, however it doesn't go into great detail about poisonous look-a-likes. It states poisonous look a likes if any but very short descriptions. It does state cautions for plants that can be harmful if eaten too much. Each plant also has quick reference characters on the side of the page to indicate if the plant can be used for drinks, hot or cold, grains for making bread, salads, trail mixes, soups and many other things. Its a must have for foragers and campers alike. Always remember to cross reference other books with it to ensure safe foraging.

  • Very informative book!!!

I have only read about a few of the plants, and, from what I have read, I've found out some very interesting facts on which plants are and aren't edible. Some of which I thought as a child were inedible, I found out were actually edible. ie: acorns, juniper berries (purple), wild strawberries, and, many, many more! Great book...would recommend to whomever is interested in foraging for food.
