PATCH ALL THE THINGS!
I needed a patchbay that could be entirely controlled and redirected without a computer. This meets that with outstanding results. The A880 has an internal memory allowing you to write different configurations into a bank that can be recalled with program changes over MIDI, this is extremely appreciated in a setup where I'm using everything but want to focus only on specific instruments at a time. There is a successor by Edirol, the U-880, which I believe is identical except it has flash memory (this A-880 needs a battery for memory functions) and an additional USB port for computer use. My only gripe would be the price, something that all patch bays unfortunately are affected by. competitor patchbays that actually allow you to change the routing directly from the front panel are very, ... Works well for me.
Works perfectly for my live rig, however I would have liked it to be more compact depth-wise, simply because, for my application, it has to be readily accessible. In other words, it has to be mounted on my stand so I can select different midi routing during live performance. I use a Standtastic 4-tier stand with 3 keyboards. The remaining tier is tucked under the top board and holds a vocalizer and the A-880. The only downside with operation is that the routing doesn’t stay lit up, requiring pressing the in button before making routing changes. For live application, it’s an extra tap. I would have given it a 3 rating if not for the fact that it’s the only unit I could find. I previously bought an old Casio unit on EBay, which I think would have worked for me, but it turns out the ... It's "Old School" but they work great.
If you are "old school" and need to connect multiple midi devices, without using a computerized platform this is the just the perfect tool, or one like it, to have. They are fast becoming rare, and will simplify your setup with out latency.
