Synopsis
One of the world’s leading historians re-examines World War II and its outcome If history really belongs to the victor, what happens when there’s more than one side declaring victory? That’s the conundrum Norman Davies unravels in his absorbing new book No Simple Victory . Far from being a revisionist history, this is instead a clear-eyed reappraisal, offering new insight by reevaluating well-established facts, as well as pointing out lesser-known ones. Davies asks readers to reconsider what they know about World War II, and how the received wisdom might be biased or incorrect. He poses simple questions that have complicated and unexpected answers. For instance, Can you name the five biggest battles of the war in Europe? Or, What were the main political ideologies that were contending for supremacy? The answers to these and other questions—and the implications of those answers—will surprise even those who feel that they are experts on the subject. Norman Davies has established himself as one of the preeminent scholars of World War II history, in the tradition of John Keegan and Antony Beevor. No Simple Victory is an invaluable contribution to twentieth century history and an illuminating portrait of a conflict which continues to raise questions and provoke debate today.

I got the Blu ray of STRANDED, a sci Fi movie starring Christian slater and I got it at a really great price from estocks_usa. I'm a bit surprised on how fast they got it to me because of the 4th of July weekend window I'd ordered it in, but it got to me earlier than listed and well wrapped up. It got to me in brand new looking shape. Good seller, fast shipping and they sent me what they advertised.

I ordered the Jefferson Airplane cd 2400 Fulton Street from estocks-USA. It’s a double cd set. It arrived very quickly and was packaged superbly. However upon opening the package I found that only one of the two cds had been shipped. I reached out to the seller to make them aware of the problem. They quickly responded and took responsibility for the mistake. Moreover they immediately refunded my money no other questions asked. These days it’s rare to find a seller that puts the customer first!!!

  • WW2 reinterpreted largely through hard numbers and statistics

This book more or less follows the conventional American narrative regarding the Second World War, but what makes it particularly valuable is its use of various statistics compiled from official documents of different countries to illuminate what was really going on in a logistical sense. Two examples of facts made abundantly clear from this data: the European theater of war was overwhelmingly fought between the Soviets and Germans, with relatively little (perhaps less than 10%) of the soldiers engaged being from western Europe or the United States. The Warsaw Uprisings saw casualties comparable to D-Day, every day, for weeks. The US's war effort was mostly focused in the Pacific, though the US was also a manufacturing powerhouse that was also critical to the Soviet war effort. Lots of ...

  • A WWII Gem

About 60 pages in I can say that it is very evenhanded. The well known history of Veale is shown to be fairly biased against Germany, which I find refreshing.

This is a very thoughtful, well researched look at World War II. I enjoyed it very much. I recommend it.
