This CD is a themed dark adventure for the otherwise super-talented metal group Dream Theater. They have said that it is a fantasy CD, and you can tell right away from the lyrics that the words to the songs won't be easily confused with reality. There are the usual cool riffs and master keyboarding, but it is just undermined the entire time by the constant references to the creepy fantasy world that contains things such as the "dark master." I really don't understand why they had to resort to this dark material. It really tells me that the members were just looking for a change and were tired of the same old melodic metal that was no longer challenging to them. But, the thing is when you are as talented as these guys are, they can probably get bored on anything out there. That is not taking anything away from them. Just stating that even the pros need to have a change of pace every once in a while and do what is seemingly challenging to them, if even for a moment. Ultimately though, the fans should be shouting, "Remember Me, I Gave You Life." to the members of Dream Theater. It is due to the fans they have much success and a hugh following around the world. Surely we can expect more on the follow-up album. Hopefully they will have enjoyed their departure from the ordinary enough by then. Awake again???Read full review
This release is near the bottom of my favorites list of titles by this great band. A bit disappointing actually, it seems to drift here and there and isn't a very cohesive effort. Its almost like the band got bored and decided to put out some material that would shock true fans like myself. I'm so glad that they followed this up with the latest offering "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" because 2 average releases in a row coulda spelled trouble for the band. If your new to Dream Theater you'll wanna skip this title and either buy the new release that I just mentioned or go back into the catalog to "Awake" "Falling Into Infinity" or even maybe check out some of the awesome covers in the bootleg series or the EP "A Change Of Seasons" for a better taste of the band and what they are capable of.Read full review
Great album, excellent driving music

Truly a masterpiece. It has everything you would expect from DT. Heavy cool riffs, screaming and soulful vocals, tear evoking melodies, insane guitar and keyboard solos, jaw dropping rythm patterns and band synchronicity. You could not make a better or more well rounded prog rock record. Too many favorite parts to list. Its sort of awake meets train of thought but in a completely fresh and innovative manner. Get it, fast, you will not be dissapointed.
I like this Dream Theater effort. To me, it is the best stuff that they have produced in a while. It has everything that progressive music fans will like. It does get a little dark, but DT does dark on this effort very well. I think that this is much better than the Train of Tought and Octavarium CDs. Of couse, the musicianship is outstanding (This is DT, and they are fine musicians). What I like is that it sounds like more time was put into the writing of the songs. On the last couple of efforts, it sounded to me like they just recorded jams and added vocals to the jams. This sounds like they put more song writing effort into this one. The money to buy this CD is money well spent.
