I bought this CD because I'm a fan of YES and was looking for a more danceable songs. I found what I was looking at this CD.
I came across this on an eBay trawl to add to my extensive Yes collection. Yes have been accused rightly I agree of milking their fans over the last decade by too many reissues of their classic repertoire, but this is something really different. Its an album of classic yes songs remixed and sampled by Virgil Howe, son of the band's guitarist Steve Howe, which on some tracks you can tell he has taken from the original vinyl record. I was at first sceptical that this would work as I normally loathe the 'drum and bass' type sound, but it really works and have played it many times. He's taken the haunting sound of vocalist Jon Anderson perfectly, underlined by bassist Chris Squire's unique style with of course his father's stunning guitar sound overlaying everything. This is excellent music to tap your fingers and feet to, I think it will win Yes a lot of younger fans, something that 'Owner of a lonely Heart' did when released. Well worth a listen to anybody who appreciates good music, whatever their taste.Read full review
I've long been curious as to how this would sound. I suppose I have to say first and foremost I've come to this as a Yes fan. That presents some immediate difficulties in that knowing the source there are obvious expectations for the ebbs and flows in the music. Yes tracks have quite complex structures, but perhaps more importantly, they have climaxes and resolutions of musical development. The expectation of any of that is therefore continually frustrated with these remixes - they are of the variety that takes certain musical themes and interplays, stretches and repeats them rather than the approach which retains much of the structure and content of the original song. I hope that I am not so musically unadventurous to dismiss this because of the genre - I am generally quite eclectic in my tastes. Given that it is the more 'hardcore' dance-beat approach it's pretty difficult to see who this disc might be aimed at. It isn't the sort of music that really lends itself to a dance audience and unfortunately it isn't skilled or imaginative enough to add anything either in content or insight. I admit I've only listened through once and it may be that it does grow [if I can bring myself to persevere], but to be honest I doubt it. I'm afraid it doesn't look likely at this stage I could even put it down as interesting but flawed experiment.Read full review
