Epic score that is thematically and orchestrally grand!
I don't consider myself a fan of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials," but I have to admit that the film version of the first book in the series, "The Golden Compass," really appealed to me. I won't describe any of the plot elements here, but I will say this is a movie with impressive and intruiging philosophical ideas along with superb visual effects, art design, good performances and strong characters. Another highlight of the film is the magnificent score written by French composer Alexandre Desplat and performed expertly by a vast orchestra and choir. An interesting touch by Desplat is that he employs a variety of exotic instruments to help suit the various landscapes of the story and ethnicities of the characters. The score opens with a distant statement of the film's main theme ... The score opens with a distant statement of the film's main theme in the cue "The Golden Compass," which is complemented by Mongolian throat singing, tingling ethnic percussion, orchestra, and piano. It's not long after this that the score literally takes flight with the lofty and lyrical "Sky Ferry," a wonderful piece of music that perfectly fits with the images in the film. The main theme for the Golden Compass reappears throughout the musical journey, which helps instill a much-needed sense of mystery into the score. The rest of the score involves quite a few action cues ("Lyra Escapes," "Samoyed Attack," "Lord Asriel," the terrific "Ice Bear Combat," and "Battle with the Tartars") as well as moments of adventure ("Lyra, Roger and Billy," "Lord Faa, King of the Gyptians," and "Riding Iorek"). It is in some of the these cues where Desplat uses his exotic instruments as the story unfolds and the heroine, Lyra, meets several new characters. The main strength of the score is that Desplat maintains a strong sense of character, and although the themes written for each character don't all necessarily reach their fullest potential, there is a steady build-up until the final moments of the score; several themes come to a head in the final battle cue, and things end with a note of triumph in "Epilogue." Kate Bush lends her vocals to the ethereal closing song, the appropriately titled "Lyra," which evokes heavy feelings of winter. Not a bad idea since the film's final act takes place in a icy/snowy climate. Overall, Desplat's score left me not only intellectually satisfied but also impressed. With tremendous help from the performance of the orchestra, he has produced a strong set of themes, and hopefully with the continuation of this film franchise we might get a fuller treatment of some of these themes. I highly recommend purchasing a copy of this score, whether you are a fan of Desplat's or are just seeking an enjoyalbe and thematically rich adventure score.

The author is not very well-known to me, but she knew to give the magical touch and to create an excellent atmosphere to the film.
