  • best book on raising sheep for a small scale farm

I misplaced my old original copy, and so I bought a "new" one online. This is a great reference book with an author is is clearly knowledgeable about sheep and loves the species. Over the years, I have read several other sheep reference books, and they are not as good. Frequently, the author has much less experience with sheep, raising them for only a few years before attempting a book, or raising hair sheep, which are far less common, with much different management needs, or they aren’t specializing in sheep, but raising a small flock, alongside many other species of livestock. Meanwhile, the author of this book, is deeply specialized in sheep, with decades of experience.

  • Super place to start!

The book led my wife and I before she went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ in early 2000's into a 7+ year experience raising and showing sheep both Meat and Colored wool sheep on the west cost out of Napa, Ca. Great experience and the book was the foundation.

  • Good book for getting starter

Overall the book covers a good basis for someone getting started in raising sheep. Definitely not going to teach new tricks to an old dog, and I really didn't find much 'new' in it. But then again, when it was first published in the 70's maybe it was cutting edge. We're raising a few sheep for backyard meat and this covered the basics. I highly recommend Storey's barn guide.

  • Great!

This is a great book! It contains everything you need to know about sheep from feed to breeding. Highly recommended!
