Additional Information
Award-winning actress Emily Watson (BREAKING THE WAVES) stars in this true story detailing a scandal that rocked Britain's childcare services. The directorial debut of Jim Loach, son of acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach (KES) and written by Rona Munro (LADYBIRD, LADYBIRD), the film follows the trials and tribulations of Margret Humphreys (Watson), a Nottingham-based social worker who uncovered one of the biggest social scandals in Britain's recent history: the deportation to Australia of children living in care. Through dogged determination and against overwhelming odds, Margret pressed forward on an almost single-handed crusade which would see thousands of families reunited and the wrong-doers brought to justice. ORANGES AND SUNSHINE is an extraordinary film and a mesmerizing portrait of a remarkable woman.

  • Child Migraints ,A shameful part of British history,, a must see DVD

I bought this DVD having just read "Empty Cradles" by Social Worker Margaret Humphries.I found the book educational, a fascinating, enlightening ,humbling and somewhat embarrassing read . The DVD further highlights what happened to several Child Migraints during the 40"s,50"s 60"s and 70"s.These were already vulnerable children, many of them taken from the British Care System ,they were taken wihout their parents knowledge to several countries including Australia, "the land of Sunshine and Oranges" Many of them were told they were orphans and were subjected to all types of abuse. Margaret Humphries worked tirelessly and pashionately to try to find surviving relatives and in doing so giving individuals a sense of identity and belonging, something they never had . Both the book and the DVD ...

  • Happiness and heartbreak.

The story was well worth the telling and reminding us how governments can deceive the population for generations. Thankfully the bravery of a lone social worker brought this story out into the open. A brilliantly acted film with all the emotions that you would expect from such a difficult subject.

  • Oranges and Sunshine DVD

A true story that needed to be told and an apologies that was a very long time in coming. This well acted film will keep you engaged and will take you through an array of emotions, leaving you thinking how certain things can happen ( for so long) without questioning the legitimacy of the activity
