If you are buying a Japanese NTSC Megadrive, there are some small note-worthy things to know before purchase: - Games from later years in the Mega Drive/Genesis lifespan may be region locked to European/US machines, and these will not work without modification to the console by way of a region switch. - You are likely to need a Stereo or Mono RGB cable for playing the game, as the console does not ship with a built-in RF Modulator by default. However, the purchase of this is well justified due to the far superior RGB picture quality acquired by using such a cable. And for modification/collection enthusiasts: - The Japanese Mega Drive has the huge readout style "16 BIT" logo emblazoned that screams "LOOK AT ME, I AM SPECIAL!" as compared to the English speaking language Mega ... Needless to say: Don't even consider trying that at home after purchasing one! What do I like and dislike about the product? Likes: - The very original style of Mega Drive; good for collections. - Considerably larger 16 BIT logo; good for rubbing in the faces of those who do not appreciate the good ol' Mega Drive/Genesis. - Full size cartridge doors; good for not having to do an ugly cart slot enlargement mod to your beauty of a newly purchased console. Dislikes: - Price; Whilst understandable for their scarcity, the original Japanese Mega Drive does command a high price for what is essentially a larger bragging right stuck on the front of it. - Scarcity of aerials; Currently, the only way I know of to get a connector to hook up this style of Mega Drive to the TV is to buy a special RGB cable from eBay. Whilst this does result in an immensely better picture, there is also the fact that this runs the console at an additional £11-£13 (or your regional equivalent) to the base unit's purchase price. How does this product compare to others? - This is largely a collectors item. It is still a great console, and if fitted with a reasonably simple to install region switching mod, it will play any game without fail (provided the cartridge's required setting is selected on boot-up.) - However if you are simply looking for a Billy-Basic Mega Drive/Genesis for your kids to mess around on, you're better off purchasing your region's equivalent rather than spending the extra on this.
