The Original Book on Monopoly
As a Monopoly collector, I had to have this book. I had three other books about Monopoly, but Maxine Brady's book was the first to be written on the subject. Perhaps if I was not as familiar with Monopoly as I am, it would have been a better read. Mrs. Brady will take a simple to understand concept and give a long drawn out explanation that, in my humble opinion, is not necessary. "For instance", "for example", and "let's say" are used about a thousand times throughout the book. My biggest problem is Mrs. Bardy's misinterpretation of the rules. She is writing the book as an authority and expert of Monopoly, yet there are at least two blaring instances of misunderstanding of what the actual rules state. To her credit, she is not the only one to misinterpret the rule stating when you ... As a Monopoly collector, I had to have this book. However, throwing in an entirely new rule like selling your property to the bank is not excusable. No where in the official rules does it EVER say you can exchange property to the bank to fulfill a debt, with the exception of bankruptcy. The fact this book was written in the 70's could explain why some of Mrs. Brady's historical information is also inaccurate. Perhaps the facts had not yet come to light. To Mrs. Brady's credit, there are some interesting data on statistics and probabilities. Also, it was about time someone wrote a book on a game that had been around for over 40 years. Too bad it was a book writer and not a Monopoly lover. I know you probably weren't interested in my interpretation of specific rules for this review, but it brings me to the bottom line. If you're looking for a collector's item, buy this book. If you're looking for an accurate source on the game of Monopoly, buy one of Philip Orbanes books, "The Monopoly Companion" or "Monopoly, The World's Most Famous Game & How It Got That Way".
