A terrific old movie!
Director Lewis Milestone's 1939 film "Of Mice and Men" has to be one of the top ten movies of all time. The tragic tale of two "bindle stiffs"-itinerant farm laborers-traveling together in search of work, and, ultimately, a new life on a place of their own, is a masterpiece of the film maker's art. Set in the Depression-plagued 1930's, it is a study on the human condition as well as the bonds of loyalty we can establish with one another. George Milton (well-played by a then 30-year old Burgess Meredith) is a dreamer who longs to get ahead in life, but is hampered by his traveling companion, Lennie Small (played to the hilt by Lon Chaney, Jr.) who is mentally very handicapped, and childlike. Lennie is a mountain of a man who, unfortunately, doesn't know his own strength; this, coupled with ... Produced by the Hal Roach studio (famous for "The Little Rascals" and Laurel & Hardy pictures), John Steinbeck's literary triumph is a tour-de-force for some relatively unknown-at the time-actors. Though nominated for Best Picture of 1939, Of Mice And Men amazingly didn't do well at the box office-and was overshadowed by the costlier productions, "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz". Quite a shame, because this movie is at least as great in stature as those films. Highly recommended.

A dramatic masterpiece!! Easily one of the best films ever produced. An excellent example showing that the Hal Roach Studios were capable of producing more than comedy films. This is a film that you can watch over and over and never tire of. Burgess Meredith gives a star performance as George Milton. And the film is completely stolen by Lon Chaney Jr. as Lenny Small, a role that gave him his first chance to show the depth and range that his acting ability was capable of. A stellar performance and one that has been copied by many others!!! Buy this film-you won't regret it!A dramatic masterpiece!! Easily one of the best films ever produced.
