Synopsis
From New York Times bestselling author Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game -- adapted to film in 2013 starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford -- is the classic Hugo and Nebula award-winning science fiction novel of a young boy's recruitment into the midst of an interstellar war. In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut--young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training. Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister. Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives. Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel. No complaints here! Arrived later than advertised, but that was fine. Good communication by seller. 150-year old book actually arrived in better condition than I expected even though it was delivered inside a thin plastic envelope. For the sale price, I am a very happy customer. Thank you!

  • Philosophically interesting and a page turner

I read this to my son ten years ago and then stayed up until the early hours to finish it to find out what happened. I went on to read pretty much everything in the series and especially enjoyed the "Shadow" series which has a parallel timeline focusing on a character called Bean. My son is now twenty and I bought both of us this hardcover edition - this is my favorite dust jacket picture of the versions available.

  • Top Ten Sci Fi of all time.

After 20 years, this book is still a MUST for any Sci-Fi lover and should be high on the list for readers of ANY genre. A theme for all time... with a twist. The horrors of war and the long term effects of that war. But this time there is a place saved... and a place destroyed, because of political decisions that bring a naive boy into the middle of the "game". This book is written at the highest level of literacy in any genre. It is a shame that many readers pigeon-hole Sci-Fi as a teenage boy thing. Here is a book (among only a few) that totally destroy that myth. If you read this book, you will always be glad you did... and just maybe.. you will want to read the entire saga.

  • Great SciFi

This book is great for young adults. It is science fiction with true life lessons and ethical situations. The use of technology and video games mixed with political issues makes this book a great read with an interesting twist at the end. GREAT BOOK!

  • A True Shocker

Many books claim to deliver a shock. This one does...And how.. It is the story of a very young boy sent to military school in the hope he will one day be a leader in Earth's desperate struggle against aliens. His training gets tougher & tougher & tougher still. When I got to the big shock, I sat there going "Wow"/.
