This collection is a must buy for fans of classic British horror films. Amicus produced great anthology movies packed with amazingly exciting stories and featuring a terrific cast of familiar actors. They just don't make them like this anymore. These vintage films are atmospheric and chilling, fascinating portmanteau filmmaking full of pulp horror suspense. I just can't recommend this highly enough. This is one of my favourite boxsets, the quality is excellent. Dr Terror's House of Horror set the blueprint for Amicus'cycle of portmanteau horror films, clearly modelled on the Ealing classic Dead Of Night. The film features the clever linking device of Dr Schreck and his fatal Tarot deck. Perhaps the best remembered sequence stars Christopher Lee, Michael Gough and a vengeful crawling hand. Donald Sutherland appears in the genuinely creepy final segment, about a vampire bride. The House That Dripped Blood contains a finely crafted quartet of horror stories that are mildly frightening without showing a single drop of blood. The atmospheric moody photography delivers old fashioned entertainment. The third episode 'Sweets To The Sweet'is perhaps the most chillingly impressive, involving Christopher Lee and his seemingly innocent yet sinister daughter. And Now The Screaming Starts stars Stephanie Beacham, Ian Ogilvy, Peter Cushing and Patrick Magee. Quite a classy cast for such a subdued and anticlimactic picture. This is a weak horror film badly let down by a flawed script. The Beast Must Die was the last in the cycle of Amicus'horror films, and is probably best remembered for its unique' Werewolf Break' ten minutes before the end during which the audience is invited to guess who they think the werewolf is. It has gained a cult following and is unlike anything else the company produced. Asylum is a four segment portmanteau film written by Robert Bloch the author of Psycho. 'Lucy Comes To Stay'with Charlotte Rampling and Britt Ekland is perhaps the highlight of an uneven picture, nevertheless it remains one of the most polished and memorable of all the anthology films. This coffin shaped boxset was released by Anchor Bay, contains special features, audio commentaries and a well designed booklet on the films. Now I can't wait to get their Tigon Collection DVD boxset!Read full review
