Steel Dragon EX is actually 2 games, the original Steel Dragon and Steel Dragon EX. These games are also known as Shienryu and Shienryu Explosion in Japan. Steel Dragon was originally developed for Sega's STV and received several ports to home consoles. It's a fairly straightforward 2d shooter, in the vein of Raiden, with some really nice visuals and a couple of excellent weapons. The music is cool for the most part, with a couple of belters. Steel Dragon EX is the long awaited follow up, Warashi released a number of shooters in the meantime (Daioh, Sengeki Striker), and Steel Dragon EX is a console exclusive followup. Visuals are decent, music is forgettable, but the game play is excellent. Instead of the fairly straightforward raiden style, SDEX is a fairly manic shooter with a weird gimmick of analogue fire rate. Im not going into it for this review, but basically you can vary between a strong focused shot and spread, weak shot. Its cool. Its quite a short game, but its really much better than it has any right to be. This is really good stuff, its maybe not as good as Psyvariar, well worth picking up.Read full review
