Notes2 CD/1 DVD of all the live concert recordings released during Elvis Presley's lifetime, none carried the historic significance of his long-awaited New York City shows at Madison Square Garden in June 1972. Now, a pair of hour-long performances have finally been coupled in one package for the first time in the 2-CD+DVD box set, PRINCE FROM ANOTHER PLANET: 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION. Adding to the historic weight of PRINCE FROM ANOTHER PLANET is an evocative 5, 000-word essay written by Lenny Kaye, longtime guitarist for Patti Smith. Kaye actually covered the press conference and the concerts for his gig as music editor of Cavalier magazine in the 70s. PRINCE FROM ANOTHER PLANET takes it's title from a New York Times headline that accompanied it's rave review of the King of Rock n Rolls four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (80, 000 tickets sold), the weekend of Friday through Sunday, June 9-11, 1972. CD1 includes the complete Saturday afternoon show, while the second one focuses on the Saturday night performance. Also included is a bonus DVD that features a press conference, mini documentary, previously unseen footage and more.

  • Prince From Another Planet: Elvis Live at Madison Square Garden Deluxe Box Set

What can you say about Elvis Presley that has not already been said many times before? This month (August 2019) marks the 42nd anniversary of the King's untimely passing in 1977. This is ironic, because Elvis was 42 when he passed away and has now been gone for as long as he was alive. I'm sure that nobody who was present at either of the two 1972 Madison Square Garden shows represented on this magnificent deluxe 2 CD/1 DVD box set could have ever imagined that the phenomenal entertainer in peak form and at the top of his game would be gone forever in another five years. It is indeed funny how time slips away. What doesn't slip away, however, is the impact that Elvis had in his lifetime and continues to have to this day on American culture and on musicians and music aficionados alike. Elvis was a uniquely talented singer and entertainer who comes along not once in a generation, but once in a lifetime. He brought swagger to life before it was a commonly used idiom...before there was Hip Hop culture, Elvis had the flashy clothes, jewelry, and cars. He was the man every woman wanted and every man wanted to be. He still is. He had it, that thing, that undefined, indescribable quality that you can't quite put a label on, you can't put into words, but you know it when you see it. I have read about many people who claim that when they were in the same room with Elvis, they felt an aura about him. For example, I watched an interview with Whitney Houston, where she recounted meeting Elvis when she was a child and her mother was one of the Sweet Inspirations, Elvis's female background singers. She recalled that Elvis was "amazing to look at and just to be in his presence was awesome." But as Elvis said in the press conference before his history-making New York City shows, "The image is one thing and the human being is another, you know? It's very hard to live up to an image, I'll put it that way." Perhaps Elvis couldn't live up to that image in his personal life, and we all know that he had human frailties and shortcomings, but when he stepped on that stage and strapped on that black Gibson Dove, he wasn't merely a Prince from another planet, he became a Rock and Roll God. These 2 CDs & 1 DVD are a testament to that. The sound quality is awesome, the song selection pretty stellar, the TCB band is tight, and Elvis sounds great. Of the two concerts presented here, the evening show (Disc 2) is superior to the afternoon show (Disc 1) because the pace is a bit more relaxed, a couple of songs are left out, the band sounds more in sync, and Elvis seems a bit more comfortable and in control. By the time Elvis has the house lights turned up so he can get a better look at the audience and shortly thereafter launches into the opening of Willie Nelson's "Ain't it Funny How Time Slips Away" with, "Well, hello there, my it's been a long, long time," you know the end of the show is near, but you really do hope that It keeps on going. With this deluxe box, it does. You can relive these historic shows over and over again. I have always thought that it was a travesty that MGM & RCA didn't have the professional cameras rolling for these NYC performances. Elvis hadn't played there in 15 years, and you could just tell by the buildup and by the earnestness that Elvis approached these shows with that he would be putting his best foot forward and aiming to please. He did not...he does not disappoint here. Although the bonus DVD does provide some 22 minutes of 33 millimeter, fan-shot camera footage, it is not of the highest quality. Nevertheless, it is important to Elvis fans as THE ONLY known footage of these shows. The press conference is also presented here in full and shows the sense of humor and the serious side of Elvis. At one point, a reporter asks Elvis if he supports war protesters and if he would himself volunteer for military duty today. Elvis sincerely states that he is an entertainer and would prefer to keep his opinions on social matters to himself. The press conference is truly a highlight here and the documentary is nice, if a bit too short. All-told, this deluxe treatment is something that these shows deserve. This is, unquestionably, a welcome addition to any Elvis fan's library. Buy it.
