Grin and bear it!
Most of these episodes are obviously so shady, gloomy and dour, as you would expect from a series entitled "Shades of Darkness". Most of them seemed in desperate need of sunshine to brighten up their existence. Obviously made from a higher budget, with good quality acting. I felt that there was a lot of existential, metaphysical angst prevalent which, if too much of, tends to make one long for some comic relief. It is hard going when it is so gloomy for too long, and though it is profound, it has a tendency to keep the spirits too low- truly and literally the departed. High spirits are obviously more associated with perhaps a state of presence and brightness. So perhaps this series represents the more grave aspect of people mostly dead in coffins, in the darkness underground, rather than the lively, more vital high spirited. There is a part of me that really likes the meaty, serious, profound nature of existence, but there is a great part of me which longs for a good laugh, not frivolity, but a soulful good sense of humour, which is desperately lacking in this series. Edith Wharton portrayed the upper social classes of nineteenth American and British Society with a skillful, discerning, and brilliant mind. She learned the subtleties and tricks of the ghost story from her dear friend, the Master Henry James. Behind the dark stair cases of old mansions, and flickering lamps, and whispering of nuances of sin and darkness out the servants quarters, Wharton often dramatized the fears and secrets of the privileged classes in outwardly supernaturally stories. The late Victorians thrilled at the hints of the unknown and dead haunting people lives. The magazines of the day printed them in droves. This video gathers together competent actors and superb late Victorian settings and recreates the chill ambience of six stories wonderfully filmed.. Are the ghosts real or allegories of the fearful inner states of the characters? The viewer will have to decide. It would be best to read Wharton's stories and then enjoy the video. Some of the ambiguity of the plots will take on clarity. Nothing is quite resolved, a mystery remains in all the tales.
