About this product

Product Information

Criterion Collection: Straw Dogs In this thriller, arguably Sam Peckinpah’s most controversial film, David (Dustin Hoffman), a young American mathematician, moves with his English wife, Amy (Susan George), to the village where she grew up. Their sense of safety unravels as the local men David has hired to repair their house prove more interested in leering at Amy and intimidating David, beginning an agonizing initiation into the iron laws of violent masculinity that govern Peckinpah’s world. Working outside the U.S. for the first time, the filmmaker airlifts the ruthlessness of the western frontier into Cornwall in Straw Dogs, pushing his characters to their breaking points as the men brutalize Amy and David discovers how far he’ll go to protect his home—culminating in a harrowing climax that lays out this cinematic mastermind’s eloquent and bloody vision of humanity. • Sub Pah!

A good idea very badly executed, Straw Dogs shows up Sam Peckinpah for the limited talent he really was. The repeated use of violence as his personal badge of honour in all his US films was clearly something he couldn't manage to transfer with authenticity to the UK. Whilst there is an abundant supply of of grizzly looking characters in Hollywood fill the roles of the film's baddies , I'm afraid that Peter Vaughn and the others in no way fulfill that requirement. Not one of the characters is believable, and their repeated attempts to look menacing are just laughable. Not even Dustin Hoffman, playing an American, is credible. Only Susan George managed to fill her role adequately. If only the film had been set in America, Peckinpah could have used his talents to make the film as good as ...

  • It was his home

I’m not sure the exact year this came out. I think it was a 70s movie which was later redone, but had a young Dustin Hoffman in it. I thought the story was pretty engaging. It started off a little slow, but it kept growing and growing as far as I spent, went a little bit the ending as well worth it when you see it it was his home. I love this movie and it still stands a tested time to me. I enjoyed the movie very much.
