About this product

Product Information

Director John Frankenheimer (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) directed this 1979 horror film with a strong environmental theme that was especially timely upon its initial release. Doctor Robert Verne (Robert Foxworth) and his wife (Talia Shire) travel to Maine to investigate the effects that a lumber mill is having on the environment. What they find is a cavalcade of wildlife mutations and an even more frightening series of grisly human deaths. A research expedition led by a local Native American (Armand Assante) uncovers the reign of terror of a large and very angry mutant bear.

    John Frankenheimer's OTHER Monster Movie

Director John Frankenheimer (d.2002) made a LOT of fantastic movies: Birdman of Alcatraz; The Manchurian Candidate (1962); Seven Days in May (1964); SECONDS. The latter scared me severely as an impreesioable teenager for its theme: "An unhappy middle-aged banker agrees to a procedure that will fake his death and give him a completely new look and identity - one that comes with its own price.'' Can you say MONSTER? Frankenheimer's most recent MONSTER movie is THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, starring Brando, Kilmer, Thewlis and especially, Stan Winston's amazing MONSTERS - all practical effects and well worth your time, whatever you think about the rest of that movie. PROPHECY is just a bit more than a mere a monster movie; it is done in the classic "B" movie format but with a meditation on the ...

  • See Katahdin, and Maine, in a New Light!

Native Americans squaring off against corporate loggers and paper mills! Giant salmon and giant tadpoles capped off by a gigantic, mutant bear trying to eat everyone in sight! Best of all, a great statement about how, if we keep ignoring the consequences of our behavior, Mother Nature and the environment will "level out" the playing field. A slow start to the film leads to a huge amount of action, suspense and bone crunching; all in a day and night's work for the mythical, but very real creature, called "Katahdin". Not one of director Frankenheimer's best but a worthy film for any fan of horror and suspense.

  • CLASSIC!!!!

Some people might classify this movie as a "B" movie but you have to remember the time period it was made in, they didn't have the computer effects that we do today. So remembering that, the special effects in this movie are pretty good for the era. The story line is done well but the acting could be better. All in all I think this movie is a great classic eco-horror and I'm surprised it didn't do better when it originally came out. I first saw this when I rented it when I was very young, my parents where big horror fans, and I haven't seen it anywhere since. I was surprised to finally find it again and very grateful to ad it to my collection and I hope you will be too.
