I have messed around with several acoustic and electric guitars for 40 years although I don't claim to be good. My last electric was a sweet California series Strat, but I got the fever for a guitar with jumbo frets and couldn't afford an American Deluxe Strat. I did a lot of research on the Highway one because of my budget, and kept reading gripes about the pickups being too glassy sounding. I found a 2008 Tobacco Sunburst one for a great deal on Ebay and jumped on it. When I got it, the strings on it were elevens and it was tough to play. And yes the pickups can sound a little tinny and glassy. I put some tens on it and ran it through my Vox Valvetronics amp and after trying some different settings, ( Amp - AC15, Gain 2 o'clock, Treb, Mid, Bass all three pegged, Effects- Chorus and Reverb, Master - 1 o'clock, and Selector switch at middle and neck pickup setting on guitar )I suddenly had fabulous tone, especially for Blues lead. I have found out that you can get an amazing variety of sounds out of this guitar. I do wonder what a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates neck pickup would do for this guitar ..... Love the neck, love the color, and the big headstock, love to play lead on it, the guitar just feels good hanging around your neck. My only personal gripe is the jumbo frets are also a tiny bit taller which is great for lead and bending strings but it is like little speed bumps when you are sliding chords around. I wish they were flatter and wider.... but it is not a deal breaker. I advise anyone thinking about a Highway One to play one first. All in all I do love the guitar and would really miss it if someone stole it. Someday I'll go for a high dollar Strat but this baby is everything I'll need for quite a while....Read full review
It's a Fender Stratocaster, what more do I need to say? It's American made and it's an instrument of top notch quality. I chose to go with the American Special because it's a little less expensive than the American Standard, and some say it's just as good. There are a couple of minor differences that don't really affect the playability. The tone may be a little different, but it still has excellent tone. I chose the HSS configuration (Humbucker bridge pick up), because I think it adds a little more versatility to the sounds. That's a personal preference. But, I'm just very pleased. Hendrix and Clapton played Strats and that's good enough for me.

I thought it sounded a little glassy until I plugged it into my Bass amp. Wow I thought I was John Lee Hooker. This is a fantastic guitar and I haven't done any upgrades yet. Nothing but guitar and Bass amp no gagets and it sounds hot. I can't wait to get an amp with some distortion, echo ect. I can't put it down.
