First off, I am not a novice. I presently own over 2 dozen turntables. Linn LP12, Systemdek, Sony 3000, Thorens TD124, Technics SP10 to name my favorites. But, I love cheapskate audio too, and have gone through Pro-ject and others looking for good budget decks for my kids. This is the best I have found. Unlike the entry Pro-ject Primary it has a REAL tonearm. Meaning it is more metal than plastic and features a proper headshell and antiskate. It has a proper drive belt turning a proper Aluminumn platter, not an outside drive belt turning a platter made from wood pulp covered in cheap Formica veneer. The plinth is mdf much like the Rega's I own. It has a spring loaded hinged dustcover that is proper, unlike the cheese ball Stoopid hinges that Pro-ject likes to use that like to break. Sonically it has a well defined bass and mid when using an upgraded cartridge like a Shure Type III or Ortofon OM. The stock No name Audio Technica cartridge is a little bright on the top end but wholly listenable for Classic Rock, failing on classical piano. Speed selection is no more than turning a knob as this bad boy offers electronic speed control. (Not true with the Pro-ject which means taking off that sloppy belt and changing the step on the pulley.) For the longest time, I held the Dual 505 MkII, III and IV as the budget deck to beat. No longer, especially when you can download your Lp's to a file with the included usb. A Fantastic product!!! You will not be disappointed. The 300 and 400 series use some automation which is nice as well.Read full review
