The sharpness of this lens is better than expected. It delivers remarkable quality images on my digital SLR. Only downside is its weight. It is so well made but can't compete with the modern day lightweight plastic housed lenses you can buy today.

For the price this is a bargain. It's built like a tank, the auto-focus isn't bad, but obviously not as good today's best lenses, and it is a bit noisy. The images are sharp, but when the lens approaches 300mm they become softer, especially wide open. I would recommend f8 or f11. However they are still usable. The colour is a little off, and vears towards the blue side, and contrast is a bit flat, but not too bad. These issues can be improved with software. Overall I'm very happy, and it is a very cost effective way to experiment with 300mm lenses.

A fine old warhorse. A little tainted and the close focussing was initially jammed. All working well now. I need to get it serviced. Rgds.

Very presently surprised by this lens and how sharp it is for such a wide zoom range and such a cheap price. It’s all metal construction makes it rather heavy but also means it’s very sturdy. I would imagine the newer plastic version will produce similar images and will work on the cheaper Nikon cameras too but lacks the sturdiness. If you have a D7100 or above and are looking for a cheap zoom with good quality, go for this lens.
