Beautiful thoughts and illustrations of nature and life

A beautiful book of words and illustrations of the natural world. Huge size on the large pages. Difficult to place (children, adults?) both - but a 'wow moment on every page. Large and 'important' feel to the book - for 3 - 10 year olds to dip into for a special treat - or can be used regularly, so long as adult in charge when they're younger.

  • Most critical review

A great idea brought down by mediocre ilustrations

The illustrations don't need a zoologist to point to their failings. Anyone a little bit observant will see how they jar. Robert Macfarlane is fabulous and the idea of the book so good. This is what makes it a big disappointment.

  • A must have book.

Absolutely beautiful. Superb and beguiling illustrations. Words accompanying the pictures revesal the authors exceptional knowledge of creatures behaviour and are better when read out loud. Still can't complete Jackdaw without laughing.

  • A Very Special Inspiring Book

I was expecting a good read, and this was more of a picture book. It is especially good for looking at with children in about mid-childhood (but you'll want to turn the pages most carefully!) Absolutely gorgeous. I fell in love with every picture, many of which cover a double page. Exquisite artwork by Jackie Morris. The words and letter are interactive and grabbed the attention of the two 7 and 8 year old boys who had come to visit.
