El globo terráqueo es la manera más exacta de representar la Tierra, pero es mucho menos práctico que un mapa. Por esta razón los cartógrafos utilizan distintos sistemas matemáticos denominados proyecciones, que son redes de meridianos y paralelos dibujadas sobre una superficie para intentar trasladar una realidad esférica a una superficie plana. Otro problema será el de representar la gran extensión de la Tierra en el limitado espacio de un mapa, resuelto mediante la utilización de una escala, que permite ampliar o disminuir una superficie respetando sus proporciones. Pero toda representación sobre un mapa contendrá ciertas deformaciones de la superficie reproducida, ya que la forma esférica no es desarrollable. Por este otro motivo existen diversos sistemas de proyección entre los puntos del globo terráqueo y el plano. De todo aquello se habla en este instructivo libro.
