HP Pavilion DV9700 (459567-001) System/Mother Board
Writing a review for a laptop system board is like writing a review for any other proprietary item. Often with no alternatives, it is designed for only a very limited market. In my case a HP Pavilion dv9700 laptop. I imagine, but can not confirm that this model system board fits most if not all pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 series laptops. It is still best to confirm this before you buy. HP always puts stickers on their parts that say replace with HP Spare XXXXXX-001. On system boards this is normally under the RAM which is always accessible by two-eight screws. This model laptop and system board seems to have heat issues. These issues seem to cause several problems including the GPU failure. This was the reason for the system board replacement on my dv9700 laptop. The last system ... The last system board lasted three years though, so I do not know how serious these heat issues are. Once replaced I ran a stress test on my new GPU for 24 hours. The GPU temp ranged between 58 degrees to 62 degrees Celsius during the stress test. Hopefully the replacement system will also last three years or more. Some other items of note. HP only lets authorized installers replace their system boards. Therefore when you personally replace a system board the information listed in bios relating to the system model and serial number are no longer accurate. This issue can cause some oem software to stop working, or system restores to fail. In my case neither issue occurred, even though the serial number and model listed in bios is incorrect. I have read HP believes that the only reason you as an end user wants to change that information is because you have stolen the laptop, so they only allow those HP authorized installers to change that info. The price of their work to replace a system board on an out of warranty laptop can be as high as $400-600. Hence why I replaced it myself, knowing two things... First, I could never buy (or if HP allows me to buy, claim) an extended warranty on this laptop after I replaced this system board myself. Second, I may have to buy a copy of Windows Vista/7 to install on this laptop after system board replacement, potentially losing everything. For me personally extended warranties is a none issue, as the laptop system board costs less then the extended warranty HP offered, and the extended warranty only covered parts (not labor). Likewise I had always kept everything backed up, so even if I had to replace the oem copy of Windows after system board replacement I would not lose my data. One final item of note. Before I started my system board replacement, I downloaded a copy of the maintenance and service guide for the pavilion dv9700 laptop from HPs website. This manual tells you step by step how to disassemble the product the manual covers. It also confirms HP spare part numbers or compatible part numbers too. I highly advise anyone working on a HP product to search for this manual before ordering a replacement part (to confirm part numbers), and before taking a product apart (especially laptops). 4/5 Stars and recommended because if you have an HP Pavilion dv9700 you have no alternatives. If you are considering buying a used HP Pavilion dv9700 I would advise against it (new? HP has discontinued this product so not very likely). The laptop itself I would give 4/5 when it is working, but I have read a lot of people running into the heat issues I briefly mentioned above so that rating would drop to 2/5 for the laptop as a whole.

This HP motherboard has a few known issues. This motherboard is commonly damaged by poor airflow, and overheating, and is extremely prone to the graphics chipset burning out. To make sure that your laptop lasts as long as possible, make sure to keep the chassis free from dust, and make sure that your fans are always spinning. If they stop spinning, replace them right away. Those compressed "air cans" you can buy at office supply places, such as office depot/staples/etc. Will do a good job if you use them often enough. If the dust builds up too much, it tends to stick to stuff and requires more work to clean properly. I dont recommend setting this laptop on your lap, unless you set it in a way that all of the air exaust ports and fans are not covered up by your leg, or any other part of ... Dont set the laptop on soft materials, such as bedding, pillows, etc. that could cause any of the airflow to be blocked or slowed. I usually have customers set this type of laptop on a flat surface, such as a table/desk/kitchen counter (Ceramic Tile works really well because it absorbs heat). This product is one of a kind, and doesnt have any alternatives, so if you are looking for a motherboard for this specific model of HP DV9000, this is really the only option. Because of these heat issues, try and avoid Pavillion DV9000 series laptops, new or used. This model has been discontinued in favor of a newer chassis, which in my experience, does not experience these same overheating issues.
